Greetings all,
Having completed my Gresley and having had a short sabatical from locomotives I have now started to build a Black Five to the Don Young design. Do any of you fine fellows out there have any information or know of any problems with this particular version of the Black Five.
Regards,

Ian,
There were 800 odd Black 5s (I think) with a range of boiler and other configs which of course got shuffled around the class members.
I have yet to definitely identify one which is per the drawings (I think one or two of the ones made in about 1947-8 come close) so if veracity to prototype is important you may need to make some changes.
If speed of construction is important then drop me a line as I've a 95% complete one sitting around which is getting way down my list of projects.

A fine choice of loco Ian, Sir Williams best design. There were 842 locos built and it is reputed that no two were alike. Differences ranged from small controls and positioning to different valve gear, double chimneys, roller bearings. I have been lucky enough to fire and drive 4 different examples, all are different in some way so I would think it is going to be difficult to find one specific loco. I would like to see your progress and wish you luck.

Dave,
I only ended up deciding to build a Black 5 cause a mate of mine wanted to do one, I was sitting on ther fence till I went to the SVR a couple of weekends ago and saw one sitting in Kiddy station.
The driver who's name escapes me but is a member of the Sutton club invited me on to the footplate for a look round. While there he said 'Hang on I've got to move the loco' so I did, move was an understatement, I think we went halfway to Bewdley, brilliant.
Progress is slow as at the moment I'm re-drawing some of the stuff in cad......ease of labour in the shop, I have made the reverser stand and stool though, the frames laser cut and the cylinders cast.
About another ten years should see it done I reckon.

Hi Ian,
I think you will find the drivers name is Vic Smith, a dammed good engineman and great mate of mine. I have fired to him on a few occasions, has the nickname vic the slip and I found out why when my fire disappeared up the chimney leaving Brignorth one Sunday morning. Another good mate of mine has just started building a black five in 5", if it takes as long as his Pansy, I will be in an old peoples home when I get to paint it!

Dave,
Now you mention his name I confer it was Vic who afforded me a short footplate ride......if you ever feel as though you need a rest on the shovel I wouldn't mind giving you a hand.
Oh and by the way the gauge of my effort is 5" to the Don Young design.
To date bogie bolster completed together with a few brackets and some frame stretchers....slow progress and not much time in the shop due to being knackered from work and running two teenage kids round everywhere......I think that I must be building it for an old man though...........me when it's finished.
