Hi, I have a Winson 9F, purchased from the original buyer and have finished it. I have recently made and fitted a double chimney to it form Warnetts and Hewson designs. Works a treat and worth the effort.
However, as it is an on going project with upgrading various ugly Winson parts, I would like to replace the Winson dome cover and make a proper looking item, circular from the top and not oval as supplied.
I have a small drawing of the shape of the dome from the NRM, but cannot make out the diameter from the drawing. If anyone can give me the correct diameter, either fullsize or what the miniature 5" gauge size would be, it would be much appreciated.
I seem to rcall that Winson produced 100 9F kits. Mine is No. 030. The loco is becoming a useful passenger hauler and a pleasure to run.
Thanks.

Yes he did so thanks for your help.
I will make start so I can quickly throw the original dome into the melting pot. You can spot a Winson 9F or Brit a mile away with their dome!
Cheers.

I have been in touch with Mike Jack, in New Zealand, about making a scale dome casting for me, and have sent him a copy of the BR drawing. He is going to make some scale castings if you are interested. I don't know if you have seen his castings but the finish, as cast, is superb. It will not take much to clean up a casting and make it look smooth as pressed steel. Hope that helps.
Bob.

Hello Bob, Thanks for the info. I have a foundry in my garage ala Chuck and 'Foundrywork for the amateur' so I absolutely have to cast it myself, using a 3d printed pattern. The 3d drawing is done but I am battling to get the old Winson dome off - loctite 638 I think and the brass screw is getting chewed up! Heat is needed. It would be a nice touch to use bolts to secure and not the single screw in the dome, but that might be a bit over the top for a Winson.
Thanks all. Errol

Hi Errol.
If it is Loctited on, you are right that heat will be needed...and it won't be just warm, it will need to be hot enough to melt soft solder to breakdown the Loctite. Even then you might have difficulty breaking the Loctite joint. You may have to push the temperature up to around 350/400C. Not sure I'd want to subject a boiler to that temperature without heating the whole thing. I don't know what's inside the Winson regulator. If there is an o-ring seal, you dare not use sufficient heat to break down the Loctite joint.

Hi Bob, I'm sorry but I only noticed your post today. Most of the Winson is loctited tegether except where nuts and bolts are present - useful stuff for some modellers. My Star has a single brass screw holding the aluminium dome (cover) on so I think some judicious application the the old gas axe might release the bond before the screw head gets chewed, otherwise I can always drill it out and retap. The regulator is a ball cock located under the dome. It originally single 3mm size hole in the steam entry port which could not possibly feed enough steam to cylinders. Winson just needed more hands on model engineers to get things done right and made sure that the quality control kept on top of it. If they had of got it right, I am sure that I would not be owning one now - it would have been far too expensive to purchase from the original owner.
Actually I only bought my one when my eldest son mentioned that he was keen to build Warnetts Star, a job I felt would have kept him in my workshop for too long a length of time! It would probably never be finished either. This was a compromise but I am very pleased with it, and it deserves to be upgraded. As Mr Hewson mentioned regarding kit built loco's - perhaps the best thing to happen to Model Engineering, but maybe if you are not the original buyer.
Thanks for the info. Errol

Hi Dave.
I must admit I'd forgotten about the dome casting. I'll check to see if Mike has had a chance to look at it yet, and let you know.

Gents, I have made a sand casting of the dome for my 9F. I just need to machine the underside to fit. I did manage to get the old dome off, so perhaps I will finish it this week. It's just that I have acquired an unfinished 7 1/4" gauge Greenly Royal Scot of circa 1950's vintage that I need to paint before rust sets in so my time is redirected. I will get a photo of the finished dome as promised earlier. Errol
