Nearly Finished!I've been away in France for a month, so there was some catching up to do this week. The eccentric and strap is just about the most fiddly part on the thing! When I made the strap I didn't notice the raised ring on the eccentric which keeps the strap in place. I had to remount the strap in the four jaw and machine the groove: it is too easy to over tighten the strap body and distort it! A few bits of valve gear to do, fettle the bearings, bolt it together and paint it and the job's done by Christmas! Can you please tell me which of the Stuart kits that is please? Now the Std 2 tank is finished I am looking at a Beam engine and would like to make one that can sit on a cupboard and have either a mini compressor or small electric motor turning it over very slowly.

We have parallel motion! The bearing blocks are a bit loose as they are waiting for posh studs, but I'm well pleased that it works. There won't be any ghastly nuts in sight: dummy cotter pins will rule OK! Click on the picture for the action video! John 00001 by inkaboat, on Flickr

I've been quietly busying myself with my beam engine, and have reached the stage where final assembly is in sight! It is now painted, and I'm working on the all important detail. Studs, for example, posted on the MEM site today. Studding made easy! After mucking about attempting to get all the studs at the correct height I hit upon a short cut. I'm sure it's been done before, but I domed the nut and stud in the lathe, applied Loctite retaining compound, and turned the nut back one thread and waited for the resultant set. The result is shown below. The stud was screwed in making sure that there was sufficient bottom clearance. Simples! John I am impressed with your pictures of the progress with the beam engine. As you may have seen I have decided to build the Galloway Non Dead Centre Engine, something totally different and I think requiring a lot more work. You idea of gluing the nuts to threaded rod is brilliant, I was going to go down the track of hexagon bar, thread it for the fitting side, and at the head end, just turn down a very short stub , the diameter of the stud. I think your method has to be easier and quicker than all the machining required the other way.

Motorised instead of using compressed air.I'm using a cheap 6v servo converted to continuous rotation powered directly from a R/C rechargeable battery from my IOM racer. It's a bit noisy but I can live with that! I'll make a mock generator cover for the servo labelled 'High Voltage'! The links are missing as I'm not happy with the ones that I made. Congratulations on this John. My father bought me a set of Stuart Beam Engine casting back in the 1960's! I had made him a V10 from the book that cost me 4/- (does anyone recognize that denomination!)
There were no 'Words and Music' for the Beam Engine bank then but I enrolled in the local evening class and they guided me through the project (God Bless Them). At the end it actually ran on compressed air and everyone was delighted.
It was the start of my interest and right now I'm doing the Allchin Traction engine following Bill Hughes book (that I bought for £2.50 back in the '70's!)

That is certainly a clever way of making the drive motor look like a generator. With my Galloway engine, I am thinking of hiding a small electric motor under the base and put a rubber tyred wheel running on the large flywheel. I look forward to see it with the new rods and the dummy generator on, I am certain it will look great. Keep up the good work
