I am very slowly trying to get a "Modelworks" 4" Ruston Procter tractor kit acquired second-hand some years ago into working order.
I have run into problems setting up the valve gear and valve timing which lead me to suspect that the valve supplied with the kit is not long enough and possibly may not have the correct exhaust cavity (having got to where I am, nothing would now surprise me about this kit !).
If anyone is able, please, to provide a drawing of the slide valve, the ports in the steam chest, and the throw of the eccentrics for either the Bill Newcombe or LSM design, or the dimensions of same, I can perhaps at least get some idea of whether the valve is indeed part of the problem.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.
Chris

Chris, Since posting, you may have received info specific to the R&P.
If not, I may be able to help you with a procedure to establish dimensions knowing only existing information.
You can contact me ross.bishop@ hotmail.com
I can recommend Traction Talk as a far better connection with the road engine fraternity.

Ross Ross My sincere apologies for not having acknowledged your very helpful reply much sooner. I have in fact downloaded some information on valve setting that you posted some time ago (I think on Traction Talk) and can gratefully say that with the help of that and some advice from a John Haining book I have now got the RP to run on air. Some more adjustment and fine tuning is needed when in steam before I'll be reasonably happy (and I say that because I've come to realise that trying to iron out all of the problems with this Model Works kit is well nigh impossible). Thank you again, your notes are filed away here for future reference. Chris
