Having been offered a Speedy 060 on "Steam Engines For Sale" website. I noticed that both upper steam valves were fitted directly to the copper back head by cheese headed bolts. The seller assured me that bushes were fitted to these fitting and that the boiler certificates issued by his London club would not have been issued if bushes were not fitted at these points. Having made a two hundred mile round trip to look and buy this loco, I had to reject it as it definitely did not have bushes in the above positions. I am under the impression that my boiler inspector would have rejected this boiler. Can any forum member or better still inspector advise me if they would have accepted a boiler without bushes in two to three locations? I am under the impression that the boiler had been modified after manufacture and was designed for a manifold to be used. I look forward to forum views.

You might want to re-post this on the General Chat, I don't think many people view this section.
As far as I'm aware, there are 'Grandfather Rights' for boilers completed before the modern rules came into place. Quite what that amounts to, I can't say.

As far as I am aware if the boiler is made to the drawing it is ok. Modified boilers are the problem. No one is prepared to re assess the old designs to see if they are fit for purpose in the modern world. You could argue that they must be as I haven't heard of any blowing up!

You say you didn’t purchase this loco so what is your problem. Unless you build a loco you will never know how it was built or how it as been used. Boiler certificate or not. Buying from a dealer can be even risked than buying from a private seller who as either built the loco or as run it. I have never know any boiler tester require to see under valves or question if the valves are made of the correct material. My advice would be build a loco yourself
