21845331_10100937273804804_1565212760_o by jordan leeds photography, on Flickr The origins of this project came about from extensive research and detailed surveys of the existing bassett lowke fifteen inch gauge locomotives. this showed many standard parts and also developments within the three main classes of engine from 1905 to 1916, Bolstered by the enthusiasm to see what could be considered the final development of the Basset lowke engines recreated alongside telling the important story of the early Pleasure railways and also those railways built for captain howey , Sir robert walker and others. Our present focus is on the Locomotives tender but some work has begun on parts of the locomotive . alongside this we have compiled and created an exhibition that will roll out at a railway museum some time during the summer season which is not to be missed more information will be made available as the time comes closer. Colossus by jordan leeds photography, on Flickr If you would like to take part in the project in any way or ask a question please just send us a message and one of our dedicated team of engineers will give you as much information as possible . Together we can recreate a key locomotive from the past , The second pacific locomotive in the united kingdom and one that perhaps changed perceptions of miniature engineering for the masses and remember Henry Greenly 70 years on from his death in 1947 Further information can be found here www.facebook.com/giganticlocomotive/If you would like to make a contribution lease see our just giving page on www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/giganticlocomotiveAny questions please dont hesitate to ask regards Jordan leeds Project chair

As a small association there are many hurdles to overcome. However we are looking that in the near future large components can be produced . The beauty of such a project is that the plethora of components could be machined on the average model engineers lathe or mill , larger ones we will have to outsource but at the moment we would like to hear from people interested in volunteering their services or donating ,
As an example one tender wheelset costs £300 assembled and a leading bogie wheel casting around £150 cast in steel and heat treated.

I just made a small donation. It was too easy and could become a bad habit if one is misguided! John

As the year has turned the focus of the project has shifted towards manufacture of tender spring gear and other small parts, this is where we need you!
Volunteers are the lifeblood of projects like this and several small homework projects are available if anyone wishes to make components and assist

Current progress has slowed a little due to various external pressures however I am expecting the tender drag boxes and other stretchers to arrive this week, these will be assembled and offered up for trial fitting
On other fronts there's plans afoot for the locomotives main frames and trailing frames but these will be subject to specific fundraising appeals nearer the time. The bogie hornguides castings have arrived and await proof machining and then will be sent for machining and then surface grinding

I think you'll get more offers of help if you post the drawings of the sort of things you want made. I understand that you can send drawings by email, but people like to know what they're likely to be letting themselves into before contacting you. At the moment we have absolutely no idea of what it is you need making. That's because folk don't like to be seen to be offering the possibility of helping, but then not follow through when they see what's being asked. I'm sure a lot of people are interested in this project and what it involves, but so far there's been little to whet the appetite and to even convince some of us that this is actually going to follow through to completion.

Roger, as mentioned elsewhere the original drawings are copyright and cannot be shared, there are some drawings we as a. Group have done but being in a. Pdf format I can't load them on here.
Regarding going the distance there are some obvious obsticles that need to be overcome these being finance, as a group we don't wish to go down the route of owing anyone anything secondly. Volunteers we need them to help not just make components but also help manage and promote things. There is to be an article in EIM shortly with much more detail.
We are a small group and there presently is no membership fee the emphasis is on making parts and fitting them as we go along

Interesting project but would be curious to know more about the structure of the Gigantic Locomotive Company before considering a donation and I have had a look at the facebook page. What is the legal status of the Gigantic Locomotive Company ? Who is the ultimate owner of the locomotive when it is finished ? Are accounts prepared showing income from donations and expenditure incurred ? Its a worthwhile cause but more details would be appreciated. Regards JM

Regards JM Allow me to deal with each query in turn Legal status Presently the group is set up as not for profit organisation with a basis in being an unincorporated association format. This will change in the coming months with a view towards becoming a charitable incorporated company. The locomotive will be owned by the charity Accounts will be prepared and made available for inspection showing income and expenditure incurred over the year. Financial statements and procedures are in place

The name on the frame appeal remains open and uptake has been good, we are now in a position where we will be opening discussions with contractors and other bodies in the next few months.
In other news the buffer stocks have arrived from the foundry and await machining.
We are also taking in hand a number of other matters and a management team has been formed of volunteers drawn from a number of backgrounds with a mutual interest in seeing the job done and adjustments to the groups formal structure made to allow these changes and allow the group to develop further.

Having not posted an update for some time it is perhaps prudent that i explain the current situation.
The project took the decision early on in the covid 19 pandemic to suspend all operations until a clearer picture of how the world would look and with so many railways and charities appealing for funds for their survival we felt that we shouldn't compete at the time for donations.
The group took a root and branch approach to how we wish to proceed going forward in the future and is in the process of establishing itself in a more formal standing to enable the group to function more correctly and within a properly defined scope. Certainly having the right area of focus has helped form the engineering plan for the next 12 to 18 months
A formal agreement has been made that the locomotive will be built in Bloxwich at DENVER LIGHT RAILWAY Ltd with ourselves and the company working on the project together.
