Does anyone know if the change gears from any other machine fit this lathe. I would like to be able to aquire the odd wheels as I need them rather than splashing out on a set from Pro Machine tools or EMCO Holz and Hobby. I have been keeping an eye on the usual market places for some time but I have not seen any come up singly or as a used set. Im not above trying to make them for myself but I get the impression the cutters and an arbor would cost me as much as a set of new gears. If the gears for another machine would fit/mesh I will keep an eye out for those as well.

The gears have a 14mm bore with a keyway 4mm wide about 1mm deep.

Have given up looking for alternatives or real emco ones 2nd hand. Seems like old Emco owners are a secretive squirrel like tribe. Ended up buying them from Emco Holz undo Hobby with a new set of bronze/brass half nuts to replace the Zamac ones. Good service from them, arrived well packed in a couple of days.

Hi Jon, Hope I got that right. There’s an active Emco lathe group on Yahoo. As you found parts are a bit like rocking horse manure, bloody hard to find. The guys on the group are great at helping out. Finding an alternative that “just fits” would appear to be a bit of a rarity, however gears of the right tooth count are a lot easier. They usually require a little effort to make fit...ie machine off a hub, bore to size & cut a key way or fit a drive pin & you are up & running. Sounds like you are sorted so the above is a bit superfluous, but maybe of help to others
Cheers Kerrin

Thanks for that, am already a member of compact 5 and Larger Lathes on Yahoo, they both have been of some help , I have a compact 8 and 5, the 5 first but it's a bit too small and the tail stock not offsetable are a bit of a handicap. While the UK Emco spares company is useful I have found the German one carries more bits. Nielsmachines in the Netherlands is too expensive. There seems to be many spares in the US (Sears rebadged) but postage cripples that.

Could you not source a set from another lathe with a smaller central hole and then bore and slot them to fit? As long as the tooth form is compatible.

I gave up looking as I noted earlier on this thread and as I am hardly the worlds best lathe operator , I would have more than likely ended up with some of the bores off centre.

Mine is still out of action awaiting the machining of several backplates while the spindle is out. This is the advantage of having several lathes under ownership! 6 now with the 2 Raglans which seem to use the same gears as Myford?? Trouble with house and a year of repairs then a let down with teeth have kept me out of the workshop! David and Lily hopeful of a return to metal soon!!!

David Unless they have been altered, Raglans have either 14DP or 16DP gears, depending on age and model, and Myfords have 20DP geaars, so no, they are not the same.
