Hello everyone---------my near neighbour has a Winsons GWR 14xx loco that is fully built and has run BUT the valve setting has apparently moved or something like that.........He believes that there are / were instructions available from Winsons that tell you how to set the eccentric angles and thus get the valve setting correct again......................I understand that most people set the valve in it's lead position in full gear then adjust the eccentric to match the strap etc............................I've suggested drilling a tapped hole in the steam chest such that a rod can then be used to accurately position the valve over the port etc, etc.....................Does anyone have a copy of the Winsons instructions ??......................I wonder how they initially set the eccentrics on the crank axle ??....With a jig tool maybe ??..............Many thanks to you all..

This problem continued into the Modelworks era as a friend and owner gets almost to the running lines and she fails again!! My Boxhill has 2 valve viewing plugs in the bottom of the steam chest. For eccentrics once set a fixing to the crank web as well as the grub screws in each. Very fiddly! A holding and turning jig comes to mind for this!! David.

I bought my Winson 14XX already assembled, so haven't had to do much to the valve gear. However, I have looked through the build instructions, and it would appear that the crank axle was supplied complete with the eccentrics (as an assembly), so there are no instructions for setting the position of the eccentrics on the axle. There is just one section titled "Setting the timing" for adjusting the valve gear. If you PM me with your email address, I will send on a scanned copy of that section. It is not particularly easy to understand without having the loco in front of you, and the next section deals with fitting the boiler - so the adjustments may not be quite so easy on a fully assembled loco!
Regards, Eddie.
