I was having a clean up on my Myford & noticed I could really do with a new felt wiper. Looked at the Myford site and £9.61 seems a bit steep for a bit of felt. Has anyone made one themselves? If so, did you use any special kind of felt or other material?

On my EMCO V10P there is provision to lower the shaped piece - i.e. extend the slots in it - and thus make it last another 20 years or so... John

The wipers on my lathes are made of hard all wool felt about an eighth of an inch thick . The trouble is findinding someone who will sell you a small piece. I tried about a year ago from a company near Sheffield for a sample but unlucky. The companies I found sell to manufacturers or or are manufacturers themselves and work in large numbers as you can imagine.

I used 6mm felt on my Raglan. I got a piece about 12" square from a company supplying the vintage car enthusiasts, they use it for oil seals apparently. Sorry I can't remember which supplier it was now.

try:
They were most helpful in supplying me some felt for my axle box lubrication pads. They will explain how to avoid their minimum order charge.

Well certainly its 2 pieces of felt. Does a Myford have wipers at both ends of the saddle? Worth a phone call to the guy to check if its 2 pieces or 4 pieces you'd be buying. I do tend to Baldric's point of view, if thats a full set, then by the time you've bought a piece of felt and carefully cut it up, it was probably cheaper to buy 'ready made'. Unless you have a use for the rest of the felt that is.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The Myford just has one piece of felt at the front of the saddle. The Ebay listing is for just one piece of felt. The listing show 2 photo's of 2 different sizes, wide & narrow bed. Malcolm, I'll look into the link you have given, thanks.

Home And Workshop Equipment company in Kent (Sidcup I think) used to sell packs of 2 Myford felts for quite a reasonable price. Probably all gone now, but maybe worth a call.
