Is anybody running a small cnc milling machine with closed loop stepper motors? If so any recommendations for anywhere reliable to purchase them and the drivers from as I am a bit reluctant to part with any money for an order from China that I may never see.

Or are they worth the extra expense or not in a hobby environment?

I have normal steppers and I have never had any problems with position they can be setup so that they have a very fine step ratio so unless your making very small items in an professional environment then I would personally recommend the cheaper open loop steppers. Just for reference I am a CNC machine tool service engineer. A surprisingly large amount of professional machines have indirect scaling (off the motor encoder not a direct glass scale) which is a similar situation.

Oh one small caveat, I do check backlash regularly on my machine before I setup a program.
