We joined The Britannia Club late on Thursday night. It was either me or the 3 boxes of bits were destined for e bay. £300 to number 5 at the auction. All wheels machined, axles, axle boxes, frames, and bogie frames.
David and Lily.

The boiler has been inspected to death by Inspector Meticulous, and then pumped up to twice working pressure. First major milestone!

Thank you. I almost feel a bit lost as to where to go next. I think header pipes into superheaters maybe, followed by boiler fittings makes sense as everything else will go on around them.

Good idea Jon to complete all the boiler fittings and fit them up, you can then do the 1 1/2 time pressure test and when passes know that all is good to fit to the frames.

i.imgur.com/undJSkg_d.webpNot sure if that link worked, might have to adjust it when I get home. However that's the cores of the safety valves made, using silicon nitride balls and stainless springs. Took me a long time as I'm trying to refine my accuracy, according to my digital micrometer I got them within 0.00005 of each other on all measurable dimensions. For most of you that's normal, for me that's rocket science!

0.00005" for me wouldn't just be rocket science, it would be a b-----y miracle! We aren't all Roger you know!

Hi JonL
If you click on the Imgur photo, in the album, you should get the photo shown along with a string of text on the right hand side. Somewhere in the text should be a BBCode. If you copy that BBCode and paste it into your forum post, ther photo will come up on here, rather than just being a link to Imgur. Well done with the loco. It could be in steam soon!!
Bob.

I achieved it over two items, luck is highly likely! However there is a more rational explaination, I was trying to write half a thou and added a zero....

There's nothing difficult about rocket science. (Squirt something out of one end and the rocket goes in the other direction).
It's rocket technology that's difficult....

I just cheated and bought mine from Polly Engineering. That's a good standard you've achieved across two different parts.

I've found myself unhappy with the quality of a lot of commercially boiler fittings. When I first finished the William I used a lot of commercial fittings but over time as they have proven to be inadequate or poor quality I've made replacements. Early on it used to take me a few attempts but I think I'm getting better over time. Less wastage certainly.
Two of the biggest issues I had were both down to materials: I returned a set of blowdowns as they were made of brass and some Clacks I bought from Stuart turned out to have chrome plated steel balls that soon flaked and jammed. The only fitting I am not making for the Britannia is the water gauge, but that's only because the boiler I bought came with it. I have a lot to learn about fittings, hopefully making the Britannia ones will be a good education.

Jon I made the miniature fittings for the Brit using the designs of Roy Amsbury. I did a thread on them. Might be useful.

imgur.com/a/9wYcH4fThat link (if it worked, typing from my phone) should be some photos of the fire box doors ive been working on. I've deviated slightly in that I've made them wider than usual and curved them over to help with the sealing. No idea if it will help but I like the visual effect.

Thank you, I have to do a lot from my phone these days so it becomes much more of a drama.
