Just starting to get a unstoppable urge to get into model engineering and came across this forum I have been modeling in 0 gauge for some time now but looking to build a 5" gauge loco .Having never made anything in that scale I have already found this forum very informative . At the moment I'm sorting the shed out to start my new venture.

Hi mpenn
Your journey seems very similar to mine. I modelled in O gauge for nearly 40 years, never really thinking I was good enough to do model engineering. When I retired I decide to have a go at 5 inch gauge and thought I would start with something small. That's why I ended up with a Britannia 🤔 . You will find most folk on here friendly and eager to help, they certainly have been for me.

Thank you all for the welcome, haven't thought about contacting any clubs but will look into that . At the moment after some time looking at available plans and comments about builds have decided to have a go at Don Young Black 5 have looked at smaller builds but don't really want any of them so thought it would be better to do something I'm interested in and would like to own and build. Did look for a 5" standard tank but the Black 5 seems to get a lot of good feed back. Regards Mark

Regards Mark Hi Mark Choosing one of Don's designs is a very good step to building a fine working loco, IMHO Don is the best miniature steam loco designer out there, alas no longer with us. Some will say to start small, others, to build something you have an interest in. I'm very much with the 'latter' as these things take years to build, in some cases decades. I'm building Don Young's 'Doncaster' and it is my 'first' steam loco build. I have during this build also completed a 'part-built' Pacific in 3 1/2 which taught me something re timing' but doesn't get used as I have far too much work to do on 'Doncaster'. I suspect at least another 6 years to complete and I started recording the build here 8 years ago, this should give you some idea of the work involved in these models. Some build much quicker than I am, it really depends on how experienced you are and how much detail you add? There are a number of Don's Black 5's currently being built by members of this forum, I'm sure that you will find the info in the 'build threads' very helpful. Regards Pete
