Onwards and Upwards!I'll be fixing basics first, and making it look pretty later. Here's the pic from the 'Done Today' thread. WP_20181221_20_05_28_Pro by inkaboat, on Flickr The first fault to address was the crankshaft. When the crank was turned, the small end of the connecting rod flailed about like a Cheerleader's bits pompoms! There had been a pressing error therefore the crank pin was not perpendicular to the webs: one of the bores was 0.004" out of position. The absence of side thrust washers didn't help the situation either! Today's job was a new crankshaft and thrust washers. Machining the ends of the webs, utilising a simple stop on the vice jaws. WP_20181222_12_02_13_Pro by inkaboat, on Flickr Drilling and reaming the two 3/8" holes. There's a balancing piece on the end of the jaws, and I'm using slip gauges on the bed stop to achieve the 0.75" pitch. I can usually repeat holes to 0.0004" or less using this method. WP_20181222_12_35_15_Pro by inkaboat, on Flickr My new Eassom DRO is one thou out when compared to the slip gauge positioning... WP_20181222_12_35_28_Pro by inkaboat, on Flickr Making them look pretty! WP_20181222_14_29_30_Pro by inkaboat, on Flickr Certainly much prettier than the originals! WP_20181222_15_36_46_Pro by inkaboat, on Flickr Slip gauges for the gap, and a straight through crank which will be sawn off inside the webs. It's the only way... WP_20181222_16_07_12_Pro by inkaboat, on Flickr Crankshaft with new thrust washers. No more flailing about and it turns sweet as a nut! WP_20181222_16_59_20_Pro by inkaboat, on Flickr Slide valve is stiff, so that is the next job. Merry Christmas everyone. John

Well, it leaks like a sieve - it's held together with CSK 5BA screws as I have to get some decent studding- and the flywheel wobbles, but it works and it doesn't knock! Just click on the pic to get you into flickr, and watch 33 seconds of satisfying model engineering! Please forgive my shaky handwriting and the noisy compressor. I now have to make it look pretty... Definitely an Apprentice Piece!I took it to pieces to find out why the crosshead didn't travel parallel to the base platform. Here's why: the end flange isn't perpendicular! John not vertical! by inkaboat, on Flickr

Looks like you have an engine full of features there John I hope you will have time to make some correct length, real studs with nuts for the cylinder. Jo P.S. Do you have the valve rod guide? I have a couple of spare ones if you need one.

I have a couple of spare ones if you need one. Hi Jo I am making the studs as we speak, with nuts loctited to the studs with 1.5 threads showing, just as I did with the Stuart Beam. I'd love a valve rod guide, as this one floats about all over the place! I don't suppose you have the one with the governor boss?? Thanks John

I don't suppose you have the one with the governor boss?? That's why I have lots of the standard brackets, everyone brought a governor kit and it comes with another guide with the boss on the top. Stuart Turner might sell that casting separately from the governor set if you are lucky. I could take one with me to the London show tomorrow if you would like one to play with. Jo

Today I made some modifications to the cylinder studs to pretty them up, as well as remachining the main bearings and making dome nuts for them. Here is the result. Quite pleased so far, but it will look better when it is painted! Slide valve tomorrow... One of my apprentices came round today so not much done - to be truthful it was a welcome break! It's great having three projects on the go: I can float like a butterfly and take time off for some brie... The Stuart is taking shape nicely. Here are a few pics. Go the whole hog, fit the pump to the flywheel side. You are going to fit the governors aren't you?

This afternoon was spent making all the new brass nuts and steel studs, about 40 I think! Nothing is assembled yet as I'm waiting on my friend David with the big mill to pass me some 5BA brass washers. I might just reduce my consultancy rates to him to a mere £70/hr in return...
