Na it's about right Pete, you'd be surprised how short it looks without the smokebox on.

I see he's sold a part built Ajax last year for next to nothing...

The guy selling it is James Duncan who runs 'JD Miniature engineering' good machinist and produces some nice locos. Pete, here is my 9f boiler, not that long. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Adam

I know it's at an angle but that barrel looks nearly twice the length of the Winson's.. at least 1 1/2 times longer?

Hi Pete.
If the Winson boiler was made to the Les Warnett proportions, the boiler will be 1/2" too short and the smokebox 1/2" too long for scale. When fitted together they are OK, though not quite to scale individually. It is certainly intended as a 9f boiler because the foundation ring is angled in the middle of it's length. No other BR standard has a firebox like that. They are all in one plane. I have just looked at the BR drawing. The boiler barrel is just a bit less than twice the length of the firebox, and that is how that listing photo looks too, so I guess it is OK bearing in mind the perspective of the photo.

Thank's Bob and Adam, that boiler just looks so foreign to me, the barrel to firebox proportions are just so different to mine, in fact the boiler barrel must be at least half the length of an A1 and it's for a 2-10-0?.. very strange

My boiler is also winson. One reason it looks to odd is that the barrel is parrallel when it should be tapered and the firebox is too big in every way really and just the way wrong shape. I made mine look better in the platework but it's far bigger than it should be really but not much I can do about it.

Hmm. So its been steamed and then taken apart, wonder why? Given the poor reputation of these things unless carefully re-engineered, £6k seems a lot for a secondhand kit of parts.

If it's anything like my Winson 9F (Evening Star), the whole steam circuit will need to be opened out. I started by fitting a larger steam collector inside the dome, replaced the regulator valve with a larger one.(Winson used the same valve on the 9F as on their 14XX!!). Then, carefully opened out the steam ports in the cylinders - especially the stupid little ports in the valve sleeves that are supposed to let the steam escape to the blast pipe. Finally, as it is supposed to represent Evening Star, I decided to make it more authentic by converting it to double chimney with 2 blast nozzles of 7.5mm dia. It now performs as it should, and easily produces more steam than it ever needs!
Regards, Eddie.

Yes, Pete! as I recall, the 9f boiler barrel was “stepped”. Two tubes “telescoped” together, This creating a 2” taper, or so, along the barrel length. Not much as a percentage, but. The human Eye is a powerful instrument! Eh? It looks especially strange, apart!
