I need some O rings for Locomotion, and couldn't find them in the model trade suppiers lists, so I checked out James Walker's ( a very large manufacturer of all types of O ring) website. I needed several 1 5/8" ID x 1/8" dia and 2 1/4" ID x 1/8", which were standard items in the catalogue. I asked for a price for 5 of the 1 5/8" and 2 of the 2 1/4".
The quoted prices were £44.08 each for the 1 5/8" ID, and £65.14 each for the 2 1/4" ID, plus £25 'freight charge', making a total of £376.68, exclusive of VAT, and a lead time of 40 days. These guys are having a laugh aren't they?
Oh yes, and even if the prices had been more reasonable, theres a minimum order charge of £200.

The problem is that James Walker is a very large manufacturer, as you say. They would sell to distributors and large number users only. They are just not geared up for selling small quantities to individuals. Those same prices quoted would probably also buy you 1000 of each, maybe even 2000 of each, at wholesale prices. The minimum order charge of £200 for an item that costs tenths of a penny to make, gives you an idea of how they are set up for trading. If I had been looking that small number of seals, I would have asked if it was possible to buy a 'sample quantity', and tell them what you want them for. They would probably have supplied the number you wanted, free of charge, because selling them would cost them a 'fortune' in paperwork costs......as they quoted. Many years ago, I worked for Dowty Fuel Systems Ltd.....part of the group that owned Dowty Seals Ltd. Dowty Seals used to charge those same ridiculous prices for small quantities, even to us, because of the paperwork costs. We always asked for chargeable samples, and got them free of charge. Bob.

I need some O rings for Locomotion, and couldn't find them in the model trade suppiers lists SNIP Back in the late 60's we had an O ring making gadget in our army base workshop. It comprised a plastic tray with shallow vees cut longitudinally, and was supplied with various section rubber cords on reels. We calculated the required length, cut them with the special cutter, put it in the right groove, and stuck the ends together with the then revolutionary cyanoacrylate adhesive! They usually stayed put, but I don't know about hi-temp applications like a loco. Worth a Google? John

I'd look on eBay, there are loads of suppliers on there. Why not switch to a Metric size which will probably be easier to buy and is likely to be cheaper. Just adjust the clearance to use 3mm instead of 3.175mm if they're being used conventionally ie with the ring pinched radially. Choose an ID that's just under the inside diameter it's being fitted to.

Have a look on GLR Kennions site, I think they have what you want, less than a couple of quid each, no connection to them just a very satisfied customer

I've just checked the availability of both sizes of o-ring. They are both listed as standard O-rings available from www.barnwell.co.uk who carry a massive range of imperial size o-rings. I am sure there are many others too, who can supply them, as suggested by others, above. Bob.

I ordered the O rings I mentioned, plus some others, yesterday, for just over 15 quid, and they were delivered this morning! I shall definitely use them again for my O ring requirements.
