The box of tricks arrived today, and I couldn't wait to get at it! I am most impressed with Prusa Research. Quick delivery, a first class web site and support service, and this kit of parts is just about the best thought out and presented that I have ever encountered. Every work section was clearly detailed in the book, photo by photo, and each section's 'bits' were in clearly marked bags, in sequence number order. There is even a bag of spare nuts and bolts 'just in case'. I completed it today, about eight hours work, and tomorrow I will do some continuity checks before I fire it up. Big disappointment today. It wouldn't get past the self test, and it took me some time to find the fault, which lay in a dodgy wire to the extruder fan. I got on to the chatline in Prague and requested a new fan, probably about thirty bob's worth. They asked for a video from me showing the self test. It was needed for our QA dept they said. I refused, and suggested that they pay for my time spent on fault finding instead.
The discussion ended there and they are sending me a new fan FOC...

I wonder how this compares with the one Lisa bought which looks of similar construction. Can't remember the make but it too looked like a very comprehensive kit. It was quite a bit cheaper and didn't have the sort of bed that Roger has recommended. I was tempted but don't have the time for another toy at the moment.

More problems. I got the new fan, and it tested OK. However, on reassembling the extruder head I found these two wires hanging down: they had become detached from the thermistor lead. On examination, they had never been soldered or crimped together, they were just held together by the heat shrink sleeve! On to the chat line again today, they are sending me a new thermistor. Afraid this is going to happen with these cheap Chinese printers, I have an Ender3 which was well made but needed the firmware updating to fix the lack of thermal runaway protection. I have since swapped 30% of the printer on upgrades to make it better. It’s pretty much a hobby in itself.

That's disappointing John, I would have thought a genuine Prusa would have been better quality checked before dispatch. I guess you got a bit unlucky with that one but at least they appear to have some level of customer service which you wouldn't get buying a cheap Chinese one. Good luck with it and hope to come and see it working soon.

I wasn't prepared to wait for the new thermistor, so I made some crimps out of some tiny copper tube, fitted decent heatshrinks on single wires and then both together, and it all works now! Temperature stability is spot on, and there are no nasty noises.  20190608_141958[1] by inkaboat, on Flickr This gun turret took 51 minutes, on 0.3mm layer height, and it isn't at all bad. Here is my 3D Design Studio: my bedroom actually because I snore a lot, apparently...  The printer had a few more issues, like the extruder drive gears not meshing properly, now fixed, and getting the right amount of filament 'squish' was tricky, but it all seems to work now. I've printed a front end using the support material programme, as the printer can't print windows into thin air, and the programme doubles the print time. The NATO Green PLA is just great! The layer height is 0.3mm, which is fine for prototyping, but the final print will be at 0.15mm. This is all about designing for printing, as removing the support material is a PITA! The finished item weighs 18.5g: the support material weighs 16g, so I will have to get a bit cleverer on this learning curve.. I got sent to a sleep unit in Oxford. Stayed overnight wired up to all sorts of machines and watched by video recorders, diagnosed with OSA and went back again about a week later to be fixed up/provided with a continuous airway pressure machine. Bit like Darth Vader. Got the best nights sleep ever and have had the machine since (all on the NHS). I have been surprised just how many people I have met had no idea that they had the same problem and how many people l know or worked with have the same machine that I have. Try getting your doctor to refer you to a sleep clinic. I did 20 years ago when the treatment was new and experimental, now its approved by NICE.

By the way Between you and Roger I may well get pursued to get one of these printers, Perhaps not the one you have but one of the ones made by the same company as the one Lisa on here bought. Somewhere between the price of the 2.
