Your close up picture shows fixings for tyres on the wheels, which would reduce the wear on the overloaded one. They may be dummies, of course.

It arrived today as promised, very well packed. David and I have had a good look at it, and it's a peach! Well chuffed. 20190722_174209 by inkaboat, on Flickr The linkages are lovely, and the platework is flat. There is tiny decorative detail to drool over. 20190722_172714 by inkaboat, on Flickr I now have to make five blanking plugs for the Club test on Wednesday. Unfortunately the safety valve is 7/16" x 26 BSB, which I don't have... 20190722_183036 by inkaboat, on Flickr

Mine also arrived yesterday well packed, a sadly neglected engine that was obviously a club runner some years ago. Still has coal in the tender! Very dirty & grubby with some parts missing. However looks overall in sound condition. It’s never going to be precise build but with a first class paint finish hopefully by me it will still look nice and another old engine will live for another day. When you see a quality build that look so beautiful I think it such a shame all that lovely shiny metal then gets painted over. I must paint the Hielan first though and resist the temptation to start on the Stirling. In answer to earlier question I have been along to the RSME in Reading but not currently a member. I will join at some stage but even though I am retired I never seem to have any time with four children and soon to be eight grandchildren who all live near to me. I look forward to the progress of the Stirling and find the forum a mine of information so thanks for all the postings you guys do.

A busy day getting the boiler ready for the shell test. The A/C in the workshop is a real boon for the few days in the year that it is needed! The Safety valve is 5/8" x 26, and I didn't have a die so I screwcut it 1mm pitch and finished it off with a 26 tpi BSW hand chaser. Fits lovely it does! 20190723_135736 by inkaboat, on Flickr The regulator cap was parted off in the lathe and the holes marked out by using a piece of paper glued to the face and a light auto centre pop used to cut out the holes. The paper was transferred to the cap and the (oversize) holes drilled through. 20190723_165804 by inkaboat, on Flickr Ready for the test. Fingers crossed! John 20190723_165836 by inkaboat, on Flickr

It may be an obvious question - but are they blind holes where the firehole door fixes?

Just going back a bit, you might find the adjuster on the brake block is to prevent it sitting on the wheel when released, you would be quite surprised how much it wears under its own weight just rubbing on a wheel constantly.

Phew! Took it up to 200 psi with no problem apart from a seepage at the smokebox regulator flange: my little allen screws on the new cap weren't tight enough. I'd also forgotten to tighten the blanking plug in there. Sat at 160 and the firebox was drysabone! John 20190723_200612 by inkaboat, on Flickr 20190723_200628 by inkaboat, on Flickr

Whilst the Phoenix paint I used on the Brit looks very nice, I think that it is a bit fragile for a working loco so I intend to use two pack. Does anyone know the equivalent paint codes? Many thanks Bob... John EDIT: the RAL Code for Grass Green is 6010, but there is no 'Lake' in the system. Chocolate Brown anyone?

Work has started: legacy problems already! The loco is on the rolling frame, and I'm removing the bits that need painting. This loco changed hands in 1983, and possibly again since. I've examined the tender frame, and those of you who have been to Egypt will know that the people who came after the Pharaohs could NOT have built the pyramids, and the same can be said of the person who made the tender frame. In this pic the buffer beam is nearly three mm longer at the top! When I tried to fit the stretchers, I found three different sized holes in the frames! When I fitted the hornblocks on my Brit they were clamped up against slip gauges to obtain perfect gaps. No such care taken here, they are all over the place, but it is all easily remedied with my big bastard file! 20190724_172613 by inkaboat, on Flickr Ready to go! I need to get some axlebox material before I do much else. 20190724_184615 by inkaboat, on Flickr

Hi John, don't have any worries about Phoenix paint, I used that exclusively when I rebuilt my Torquay Manor over 10 years ago, I saw it at Southampton last year and it still looks as good as new. I used 2 pack etch filler primer from an automotive paint supplier in Lowford (just up the road from you). built up with lots of thin coats well flatted down, then top coats of Phoenix paints, from memory probably 3 or four thin top coats followed by the final finishing coat as thick as I dared without causing runs.
