Had a visit from the Master this morning and an explanation about woodruffe cutters and slot cutters and god know what else cutters but what I planned to do was wrong so he saved my bacon. In return I was told to grovel so here goes, grovel, grovel!!!!! And I have to be nice as he is going to paint the cab and do the lining. I am not allowd to paint the rest of the loco, that is someone elses job but the smoke box does need a little help!!!! I might do it when he is not looking. Cheers grovelingly D

Well Mr S.Loco, you have made me feel very ineffectual in my building of models, indeed positively unproductive. Not only have you produced a very nice loco in a relatively short space of time, I go reading other posts and find out you have already built a boat. Not a model boat, oh no, a forty+ footer no less.
I am off to have a severe talk to myself which may indeed involve some finger pointing. Its high time I got on with it!!
Yours sulking,
Tim

Here's one I prepared earlier...

The phrase 'rubbing salt into the wound' springs to mind! Lovely lines, now if that were full size it might be worth something! Tim (getting on with it!)

Hello John, As an Ex-Marine Engineer I think that's absolutely lovely !!.....As with the Stirling it hails from a time of elegance and design----- properties which this model shows off to perfection........Is that decking all inlaid ??.....is that a Stuart Turner in the Engine Room ??...........I'm glad there's no radio control etc, that would have spoilt it I think...

Alan It is a Swiss Lake Launch that I copied from a photo that I liked. The decks are inlaid. Stuart 10V in the saloon. Sorry Alan, but it had four channel RC: Throttle, steering, whistle and that homemade variable pitch reversing propeller. It was all well hidden...

Drag Beams, Wooden Insert and Buffers
I found some mahogany and cut it roughly to shape on my cheapie bandsaw and finished it on my Proxxon FET saw. I tried machining the buffer heads from stainless and it was just too much hard work. It might have been some 316 left over from a propshaft somewhere! I decided to fabricate them from mild steel and use up some of my Loctite before it goes out of date! I machined the pockets for the 1/2" shanks, and parted off the 1.25" dia. material slowly and steadily to 3/16" thick. Ready to accept the loctited shanks. I just have to square up the 1/8" plates and drill some holes in them. The housings are threaded M6 and held in by cap screws behind the beam. I would have finished them today but we will Go Out To Help Out tonight!

Hi John, I built the buffers for Toby pretty much the same way, except I didn't drill right thru & silver soldered the stubs in. Anyway I got sick of cleaning them as they always wanted to rust, so I took them to the chrome platers....now a lite rub with a cloth & they stay nice & shinny!! Coming on nicely!
Cheers Kerrin

I have just made some scrap..!

New Buffers!Looking at the NRM tender the buffers are much smaller than the loco, and the bases are round, not square, so I remade them from 1" mild steel. Of course, the tricky part is the front radius, and I find the round profiling tools do a great job. Starting from the centre, putting more pressure on as the tool traverses outwards, the increased cutting speed causes proportionately more metal to be removed. It is easier to do then explain! Here's a pic showing the finished surface. Apologies for the composition! Buffer beam assembled awaiting primer. It's next to the boiler band relining I had to do as a result of something hot being placed on the band during the recent steaming! John

How easy is it to make a matched pair of profiles? Is it entirely done by eye?

How easy is it to make a matched pair of profiles? Is it entirely done by eye? Correct. Depends on how close a match is required! I am happy with what I have, although there are some who would not be... John

Hi John, You could always look at it as a couple of parts for the next loco, rather than scrap. The trouble is they tend to be bits for a range of different one! I seem to remember that I eye balled the radi on mine too.
Cheers Kerrin

Four, Six or 12 Bolts on the Buffer Backing Plate?Unusually for me, I've been agonising over the number of bolt holes in the buffer backing plate! Most of the models I've seen have four, which is OK on a square plate, but not on a PCD, which to me looks terrible. None of the NRM pics I've seen help a great deal. I made a backplate with 12 holes, but it looked too much like a cylinder cover, so I've settled on six, using M1.2 bolts with 1.8mm heads. There's my last one inserted as an example, I shall use them 'blacked' as this one is to preserve detail, and I've ordered another 50 from Polly! Getting there... John

Hi John, Yes there are six bolts, just checked some photos I took at York. The square front buffers on No 1 were fitted when withdrawn for preservation in a misguided attempt to put it back to as built condition hence also the ridiculous tender she had for so long. Regards Dave
Ps On page 31 of the Leech & Boddy book there is a photo of No 5 with square based buffers on the front which were never replaced apparently.
