Fall Plate As Prototype
Well, nearly, as the hinge only has four bolts instead of six...It folds down at the back and the floor slides out under it when lifted And when it's painted it will look the part. The compressor is too noisy to use on a Sunday!

Hi all. Where do I get proper 5" rail profile at sensible money? Thanks John I guess it depends on what you call 'sensible money'. How much do you need and are you after scale profile at 1 1/16"/ft or standard running track size? Have a look on Steam Workshop site they have a number of display tracks second hand for sale if that is what you're after. Chris D

I think PNP track is well regarded but I don't know if it's the sort of thing you are looking for

Fall Plate Finished, but Oh Dear...The fall plate really does look the part now it is in satin black. Trouble is, I've got so much better with the 2k paint method since I did the running boards that I just have to redo them to get the same finish! John

Hello John, Yes, that certainly looks the part I'd say...... Regarding the rail.......I'm guessing it's to display the Stirling single ????.......then to continue the "period look" you'll need Bullhead section along with matching chairs, screw bolts and wooden wedge locks......

Also, you could quite legitimately claim that the old loco is sitting on newer track! Chris.

Tender Drain Plug/OverflowIt was suggested to me that a combined drain plug and overflow would be a good idea, so here it is. Nothing clever about it, but it has got a Victorian twirl to it! I'm never going to finish the thing at this rate... John

Does the brass water pump have a brass plunger? If so, how do you combat galling? I was thinking about this whilst trying to find some bar stock at home to remake my axle pump ram but I kept finding brass and I didn't know if that was too close to bronze to cause me issues. My knowledge of metalurgy is sadly lacking.
I like the overflow/drain, a handsome idea.

My knowledge of metalurgy is sadly lacking. I like the overflow/drain, a handsome idea. Not sure I'd want brass on brass or even brass on bronze for an axel pump. For a hand pump it is probably acceptable due to the relatively slow sliding speed, but an axel pump will be running much faster so wear will be much greater and possibility of galling also greater (like you not sure brass on brass will have galling problem anyway). For preference I would use stainless ram in bronze or gunmetal barrel. Chris D

The pump would probably be sealed with an O-ring, which would, if sealing correctly, keep the plunger and cylinder clear of each other, so no brass to brass contact. If concerned about the tail end of the plunger, add a second o-ring at that end, to keep apart.
Bob.

The loco is looking good!! Soon be in steam!! Next week John?? Bob. Possibly, if there are no more 'helpful suggestions'... Mind you, there could be a slight delay as we've decided that as we are now properly in the 'vulnerable' age group, we don't want to take our newly renovated Hymer motorhome abroad, so it will have to go! It is on Gumtree as we speak... John

I have a display track!Received the PNP Plastics track today, and using a simple 56mm wooden spacer I got somewhere near the recommended 80mm pitch for 'True Scale' sleepers. I wanted a 150cm track kit, but they wouldn't sell me one. I had to have two x 125 cm kits or one 2500cm one! I opted for two lengths of 2.5m and enough sleepers and chairs to make 150cm: £58 including delivery. I now have to find an aquarium shop for the gravel... One minute of almost perpetual motion here... John PS. Motorhome is sold so I can finish this beast now! www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbvN9I2VZIc&feature=youtu.be

Now it rolls so easily, maybe you should think about a set of scale rail chocks to prevent the unthinkable runaway?
