You should read AME more closely Brian.

43 years between these two NSW 5"gauge engines. 5201 first ran just before Easter 1976 and 5154 had it's first run in March this year.

I have only just been shown by David how to post pictures on this site. I also have been a bit reluctant to do so as I don't want to be seen to be showing off. There are a lot of Model Engineers who are better than me and my claim to fame is the sheer volume of my lifetime activities. Barry

Not only volume, but their quality!
My lifetime output is less than a tenth of yours, and quality isn't a word I'd use to describe most of them.

A couple more of my 5" '59 class. I have made 5 of these engines from scratch and they make a beautiful engine to own and operate, free steaming and powerfull.

A couple of NSWGR '55 class' pictures. Southern valve gear. Thanks for sharing those stunning models. What peculiar valve gear, I've not seen that before.

G,Day Roger, It's Southern valve gear , and was used on some American engines. It' only use in NSW was with the 'D55 class' 2-8-0's . it is a bit strange to work out and I just coppied the full sized design for piston valves. It is very 'rubbery' toward mid gear and is almost impossible to tell when the gear goes fropm foreward into reverse. It is also vulnerable to rough track as any vertical movement in the main driving axlebox upsets the events. The crews didn't like it if the engines were working on rough sidings as they could be difficult to start if the drivers were in a dip or hump in the track. The model however works well and is a pleasure to drive. Barry

I remember seeing D55s coming through Katoomba as a youngster and wondering about the odd valve gear until someone who knew told me what it was. I was impressed I can tell you.

Dear Barry (Mugbuilder), A plea from the other side of the world. Apart from being stunned by the volume and quality of your work I am intrigued to see that several of the engines are fitted with Single and Twin (water/Air?) Pumps, what we in the UK call Westinghouse type with the valve gear on top of the steam cylinder.
I built a 7 1/4" Lynton and Barnstable 2-6-2 Tank which at the moment is fitted with a 'Southworth; water feed pump, also built a 7 1/4" Tasmanian Garret K 1, which I would like to fit with a feed pump. The 6" Southworth is not big enough and the 12" version fitted to our steam launch is too big (and anyway they don't look right on a loco, having an external valve chest).
The only Westinghouse types I have found are made in the USA by Keim Steam Pumps and are very expensive (anyway they are challenging things to build and I would like to have a stab at it). Unfortunately the USA firm will not sell the drawings, (cant say I blame them) and I wonder if you had access to drawings you would be willing to share or could point me towards someone who would sell a set.
Many thanks
John

Many thanks John Hello John, I'm sorry that I cant be of much help with rour request. I have built a few working pumps for 5" gauge engines, both in the twin and single versions. Most of the ones in the photos are dummies as I found that they were more trouble than they were worth this small. If I supplied working pumps on my customers engines I had to guarantee them and it was not worth the trouble as they can be very finnicky and are prone to hydraulic lock. They were built from a few scratchy drawings that a friend gave me which I no longer have. Very good commercial 5" gauge pumps are supplied locally by E & J Winter model engineering supplies here in Australia but am not sure if they can be had for 7 1/4". The one shown on the 'D57" class that I have just posted is a working pump but only works on one side and the dummy side is the lubricator for it. I pumps water. Best regards. Barry
