These are just three examples of a very modest modeller's craftsmanship. Barry has built more than 50 5" gauge locos all of New South Wales prototypes and all to a standard most of us can only dream of. Thanks for sharing Barry.

Photo caption? Explanation? David I started Model engineering at the age of 15 and as fate would have it have always had an engine under construction ever since and I am now 77.
The 2 unpainted engines shown here are 5" gauge models of New South Wales Government railways'standard goods' 2-8-0's . The other is a 5" gauge 'D59', also a NSWGR engine. I have over the years built 5 of these from scratch. This one is mine.

Thank you for the info! I am not familiar with your work. Without a caption, the photos do not mean anything to me. Thank you for placing them in context for me, and perhaps others. Those sure are beautiful locomotives! - David

Barry is a model designer ( Blowfly ) , a boiler inspector and a model builder , he built engines to members of the hobby by order , as mentioned his work is second to none . I think he has retired from building for others but I lam not sure of that . He is a great person and never shy from helping anyone .

I have met Barry at HotPot two year ago and at an AALS Convention. Remember he received an award for his services to the hobby at the Newcastle AGM if I stand corrected.
A very nice person and easy to talk with no matter what level of skill one has.
Outstanding,
Hayden

For a moment, I thought that first picture was a pair of full sized locomotives!

Barry also designed the B class I'm building and has provided a lot of help with sheet metal work, the boiler, advice on machining, and encouragement along the way. I'm fortunate to live in the same town so I can go and interrupt him working on his current project whenever I need some help.
It's weird to have no idea how to do something and see him do it in 5 seconds without thinking about it. This happened most recently late last week when I didn't know how to shape the smokebox door hinges. You put them in a vise and tweak them with a shifter... would never have occurred to me.
You know the 59 isn't full size because I'm not sure any NSW loco was ever that clean. I think that one was on the cover of ME once, unpainted.

Aussie might not be so hot at Rugby at present but Barry Potter makes it up in loco building.
There is some good stuff ova there, and a Kiwi doesn't mind saying so.

It had a new cab,all boiler cladding and exteriour details. The chassis was in excellent condition and only needed a good clean and repaint. The safety valves and both domes were in the wrong places and had to be relocated. I built the tender for the engine over 25 years ago and it only needed paint stripping and a bit more detail.

Hi Barry,
have you recently found the Model Engineering Clearing House site? You have a lot to offer in the way of expertise in model locomotive building and I hope to see your inputs to a range of questions that are invariable posed by the lesser mortals in this hobby, that is if you have the time and interest in doing so. I haven't looked but I would also hope to see your introduction by new members section so we can all get an insight to your achievements that haven't had the pleasure of meeting you.
Brian
