I've finished replacing the pipework on my Simplex, and am testing it on compressed air before steaming and getting my annual boiler check. I've replaced the clack balls with Viton which has stopped these bypassing, next up are the valve and cylinder stuffing glands. I've discovered the reason for the leaks from these - no stuffing! I've got some graphite string for this, but have others converted to silicon O rings or similar, and if so what sizes and how have they modified their stuffing boxes?

I am starting with new cylinders for mine but am going for O rings suitable for 1/4 and 3/16 inside diameter. Currently pondering going for a combination of cast iron ring and 2 slots of graphite either side to help oil distribution. 2 cast iron rings seemed to be a bit strong. I am reducing down to 1 3/8 dia for mine to give the boiler a chance to supply.

I use PTFE plumbers tape in the glands on my engines 2 cast iron rings seemed to be a bit strong.
If you make your own CI rings you can adjust their pressure against the wall of the cylinder by the size of the gap you set and by their thickness.

P.S. You will be surprised how easy it is to make your own CI rings
