As much as any other shortcoming, I think the scale of the Bricks/Bits of stone is all wrong but as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, the scale is supposed to be 1/12, but it certainly looks too small to me! EDIT. 2kg of DAS Terracotta being delivered tomorrow: I'm a brickie already!

Fettling and Polishing the FlywheelI'm waiting on the pedestal bits so this little job is a nice fill-in. It could have been interestingly difficult until I had the bright idea of hanging it on the back of the lathe spindle! An adapter was machined up to fit both spindle (20mm) and flywheel (1") bores. Strapped to the lathe via a long M10 stud held very tightly at the chuck end. I ran it backwards at 60 rpm as I didn't want that lump of metal unscrewing itself! About an afternoon later I managed to get a decent surface finish on the rim and one side! Looks quite promising really!

How to do the mezzanine floor?
The two pack paint dries in an hour or two, but needs a few days to harden off before any assembly, so while this happens I'm looking at the mezzanine floor/deck. I have this piece of pierced mild steel to use, and I will edge it with some small extrusion supported by steel columns, and make some nice stanchion posts for the top. I'm looking forward to re-polishing the brightwork. I might rename this 'The Black Widow'! This is a rough outline, subject to adjustment! Ideally there should be symmetry around the deck, but the flywheel shouldn't wander off into unprotected space!

Looking very nice indeed!
May I ask what make of two pack paint you used - and did you apply it with a brush or spray?

The local Autopaint shop makes it up for me, so the source is unknown. I apply the stuff via my Kite mini spraygun, fitted with a 0.4mm nozzle. It's just like a big airbrush!

More on the Mezzanine Deck
Paper template, layout blue on steel plate, cut to size and shape, two ladder layouts. Take your pick! I have to buy some more 10mm alu angle and spray it all black. Getting there! I couldn't understand why there was so little room on the crankshaft. On checking the flywheel boss it is 3/4" too fat, but I have no way of machining it back now. I was going to make a new crankshaft anyway so it can be a bit longer... Ladder Option One. Ladder Option two!

I Don't Like the Deck Anymore! This is a picture of the H A Taylor beam engine featured in ME Magazine in 1968. I have been wracking my brains on how to do the stonework, and quite by chance, I found the second and final article which describes how he did it. Simples! The grout lines were machined into the plywood before assembly, the whole thing was coated with glue, and fine sand sprinkled all over. A coat of whatever colour stone you want, and the grout lines cleaned out and filled with black paint. I've done the machining bit today, making new ply panels, and I've ordered some fine white sand... BTW does anyone know where to purchase the 1/8" cord drive belts? I don't really want to use bright green Urethane! Setting the Proxxon to work with a mini 90 0 router bit at 6000 rpm. If you look carefully at the LH end you can see where I wandered! Much nicer methinks! The grout lines will be extended upwards when it is assembled. This looks overly fussy to me, not dignified like the earlier pics!

I kinda like the punched plate, quite industrial. Reminds me of the steel tile floors of the rolling mills I worked at.

It will fit on top as the whim takes me: sideboard ornament or factory floor! Today I glued it together, and I've been Gucciing the woodwork: filling, filing and sanding, and getting the additional grouting grooves in the right place. Waiting on the silver sand now.

I hate being picky but the size of the blocks seem out of proportion to the beautiful engine .The one i built the flywheel is 7 inches dia and that would make your blocks in full scale over 4foot long and a smaller brick would seem more appropriate .Sorry i have no room to talk i build something but never get around to painting and finishing.

I admit to some initial trepidation over the blocks, but it seems that my 1:8 scale beam engine used expensive quarried granite blocks instead of simple bricks. They were about one metre long, so that's alright then... Really though, it looks great in the flesh! John

Sorry John, I am with Chester here, it looks like something out of a men's, well dare not mention it! Suggest some on the foot research of the real things might help. What do they do at Kew for example or why put it on a bloody great platfrom anyway. There has to be something better than a motorway stop off!!! Cheers, your ever devoted disciple, David

Cancel the DAS? it might not truly scale but it looks a lot better. Granite blocks make more sense than bricks for mass and strength. If it were brick I can imagine it would have been those very hard blue engineering bricks favoured by railway engineers

If you want to go with Das then apply wood glue to the ply and then spread a thin layer of Das. You can then stipple the surface to get an even texture before scribing in the joints of whatever stone sizes you want to replicate and then paint. Suggest doing one side at a time so it does not dry out. A better option is to use something like polly filla with some woodglue mixed in 50/50 with the water, see link
