Thanks Chris, your suggestion regarding remote controlled cameras is worth investigating. It wasn't until you mentioned it that I realised that I have just such a camera on a very cheap and basic drone I have. The camera in the drone records on my iPhone when it is paired with the drone. Quite incredible really. Today I added the blinds that are an essential feature especially when heading into the setting sun or in the heat of summer. Glazing the passenger side front window proved a right pain as no matter how I measured and trimmed the acetate window material it wouldn't quite fit. After a couple of temper tantrums and reaching for the big hammer it all decided to pop in without a mumrmer. I must say that I'm indebted to fellow club member Les Penrose, for sharing of ideas and showing me his superb models of various NSW Railmotors. Sadly the real thngs are now a thing of the past along with the closure of many country branch lines.

The driver looks realistic. Is it just a photo behind the window?

The driver looks realistic. Is it just a photo behind the window? The driver does look rather lifelike I agree Andy but in fact the figure comes from a 1/12th scale series of doll's house cast resin figures that initially I intended as passengers in the BR Mk1 coach.
They are produced locally and you can see the range of figures here:
Hopefully the link will work

Here he is sitting in my BSK and the others: I sold my BSK to a chap in the UK and to add a little detail for him I made a scale model of the "Turnout" magazine which feature photos and a right-up of the model. I hope you like it!

Hi Mike,
I thought the beautifully detailed interior of the BSK looked familiar. By coincidence my BSK and parcel van, I can't remember the letter code for it, SKA? both came from a chap in NZ. who had done work for Doug Hewson. Doug's coaches are works of art and doing the interior of the BSK is one of the jobs on list of things to do.
Thanks for posting the photo of my driver enjoying a summer break in the UK riding in a classic BR passenger carriage while he waits to take the railmotor out on the main line for the first time.

The headlight on the railmotor has been giving me grief and taking up time as I try to recreate the unusual headlight fairing with its bowed top. After a few false starts I realised the basic drawing I was relying was in fact wrong. It's all a bit of a challenge as I'm working from a very basic set of line drawings a a small collection of photos. The rail motors were not as photogenic as their steam locomotive counterparts.
As the photo of a 400 class in a later life testing track clearances the headlight fairing has an unusual curve to the top of it.
I've now remade the 2 tubes forming the foundation to the fairing and tested the mini torch headlight that will be needed for night running. Now I know where the problem was I'm rather looking forward to 401's first run. Jim

Nice work Jim. How many little grey cell stimulants...errrr soothing ales.....were consumed during the research & execution of the design & build process?
She’s coming along nicely.

Getting the railmotor's headlight fairing right has been a fiddly task involving lots of trial and error and soothing ales but at last I have a result I'm happy with.
Following modifications to the light holding tube balsa and 'spackle' was used to build up the basic profile which was then carefully sanded smooth with any hollows being given an extra layer of Spackle filler. The first two photos show the light holding tube with the extra extension and in a rough state before sanding and shaping. Once I was happy with the basic shape a thin layer of automotive blade putty was carefully applied then very lightly sanded to give a smooth fair surface. Once it's in position with the missing light in place the same technique will be used to create the rest of the front roof section but first the stocks of soothing ales need replenishing. Jim

Very tricky piece of work, looks great! Thanks David, I must admit I've since done a bit more tweeking with the blade putty as I could see in the photo I'd posted a 'flat' spot in the left hand side of the rim still we're getting there.

At last the filling, sanding, filling, shaping and sanding are almost at an end for the No2 cab end which for 401 will be the 'front end' A coat of spray putty followed by some more very light sanding before applying another coat of spray putty followed by a final coat of silver and the roof is starting to look the part. I'm still not totally satisfied but all is now at least ready for a test run on a friend's track.
I've lost track of how many soothing ales this project has taken so far but I have noticed a jump in the NZ Beer exports to Oz in the last few months

Looking really good Jim but what's this about NZ beer? Don't we have enough here? Barry I found it at Aldi Barry. It's graet for modellers, keeps the hands steady and the mind as clear as crystal.

Spent a cold bleak afternoon making and fitting the Rail Motors hooter which was a welcome break from all the fiddling etc with the Rail Motor's cab roof. Jim
