Looking really good Jim but what's this about NZ beer? Don't we have enough here? Barry If Fosters is anything like a yardstick, Aussie beer is the contents of a urinal, chilled and gassed

You shouldn't take the pi$$ out of Aussie beer. It's the only thing giving it flavour

Jim It's not cats: it's gnats!

There is now a thriving craft beer scene down here. The beers from the big breweries are pretty dire, and always have been, and you have to check whether things are "made under license", but you can get some decent stuff.
The only problem is a lot of it is over-the-top expensive so you don't go around buying slabs of the stuff. Luckily I don't drink a lot of beer.

I had intended taking the railmotor for a test run on a friend's private railway tomorrow but the weather forcast has put paid to that so I'll continue with the detailing which currently involves making the marker lights.

Much has happened since the last post apart from covid lockdowns. The marker lights have been added to the 'front end' of 401 with detailing of the windows in the passenger compartment directly behind the driver's compartment now in progress. For a break from the current Covid lock downs and 'stay at homes' we went on a 7 day Vintage Rail Tour which initially was to go from Sydney up to Brisbane with side tours along the way but the Covid struck again and the Queensland border closed cutting out Brizzie. None the less we had a great time including a run from Casino up to and through Border Loop behind these Rail Motors from the Rail Motor Society at Patterson.
This is the view looking down to lower road having looped round and emerged from the Border Loop tunnel.
The driver's view of the road ahead.
Now back to the workshop!

Into the last week of our two week Covid 'Stay at Home' order following our recent Vintage Rail Journey there has been plenty to keep my occupied. Small details such as the striker plate behind the door handle and the lamp iron beside the air whistle have been added along with a start made installing the bracing for the roof.
I've also remade the draw bar between the Rail Motor and the driving carriage following a derailment of the front bogie on the driving carriage due, I suspect from not enough provision for the vertical movement as the Rail Motor commenced the ascending grade on private line where I was testing everything. The next run will prove if my theory is right. Looking forward to getting the rail motor to the club track once that days get a bit longer and Covid restriction ease.
Stay safe and keep at least one Kangaroo apart.

Hi Jim, Looking good! Yep had the same issue with Nigel tender derailing when firing on the run & leaning forward changed the loading. I built a non prototypical coupling that had plenty of vertical movement up & some down, works well. Keep safe, it sounds like Sydney is having a tuff time!

Hi Kerrin thanks for the information on your experience as now you mention it I was also leaning forward trying to see if the video camera was working. I'm keen to get back to the track to see if the problem has been solved. I think it has but nothing beats a test run to prove it. Sydney is certainly having a hard time not helped sadly by confusing messages from the political leaders who keep sending mixed messages. Very frustrating!
Just an up date on the last post, I've now finished fixing the roof bracing which will also support the roof across the long spans between formers.

Thank goodness for hobbies, without this current project I think I would have gone nuts by now as we go from lockdown to lockdown but things will get better I'm sure. Of late I've been working on completing the roof end on the trailing end of the railmotor. The photos I've posted show how I have gone about the task starting with a very rough balsa wood form. In the photo the left hand side has been shaped and a preliminary layer of filler applied. The right hand side is yet to be shaped.
The next photo shows the filler sanded back and a start made on the right hand side. With more applications of filler and sanding the final form is starting to take shape under a coat of spray putty.
A close check in the sunlight shows there's still a bit more filling and sanding to do before all is smooth and fair.
I must admit I'm looking forward to the lifting of the restrictions so I can take 401 out to the track for another test run.
Take care and stay safe.

Hi Jim, Nice work! We are locked down too, after months of freedom, we went from that at 5 o’clock on Tuesday 17th, to lockdown at 11.59 that night! Maybe most of the country will be partially unlocked next Tuesday at 1159. Wait & see. Just think how bored you would be without a workshop!
Keep safe.
Cheers Kerrin

Thanks Kerin,
It's a similar story here in the ACT where I am. We went for 13 months without a single case of Covid. Sadly NSW has rapidly rising case numbers and given the ACT sits in the southern region of NSW it was unly a matter of time before Covid found us. Luckily the ACT has one of the highest vaccination rates so compared with the other states we're doing quite well.
Take care
Jim

G,Day Jim, Really cranky that they let that bloke out of Bathurst jail who spread the bug all over the central west. Truly fed up with the whole situation. Problem is Jim, blokes of our age haven,t got a lot of active years left in us and here we are locked down. Just about ready to explode. Love the progress on the Rail Motor.

Problem is Jim, blokes of our age haven,t got a lot of active years left in us and here we are locked down. Just about ready to explode. Love the progress on the Rail Motor. I know how you feel Barry. I just can't for the life of me understand why blokes like one you're talking about weren't tested before being released.
I'm 82 now and while I don't intend shuffling off the planet just yet if I can help it but I can't help wondering when will we get that chance to make the journey to the club? In the meantime I do a bit more each day. This is the trailing end and the sanding and filling has gone fairly well so far.
I've now applied a coat of Tamiya Gloss Aluminium which gives a nice finish to the job. At this stage I'm of two minds as to what to do with the space occupied by the power socket. I could leave it as is or I'm more inclined to make 'clip in' section with a dummy head light for when the railmotor is 'at home' in the workshop.
Thinking about that should take my mind off lock downs.
Stay safe
Jim
