Morning all, since converting my mill to CNC I no longer have use for the DRO on it. I would like to fit it to my lathe but both scales are too long.Is it possible to cut them and if so has anybody got any advice on doing so?

Searching on YouTube brings up a number of "How to" videos (so it's clearly possible): Glass Scale cuttingI used to cut laboratory tubing in years past - but it was no big deal if I got it wrong. Good luck! Wilf

I have just done this on some cheap scales I got from China. I generally followed the you tube advice however I used a dremel with a cutting disk. I carefully cut the aluminium away and got the disk to score the glass and it just broke cleanly. Unlike the you tubers I didn’t take the head out or the seals I did try and stop dust getting down the side I was using.
I am not sure what threads the original cap screws are so I replaced these with M3 being the smallest tap I had to hand. You need to fix the end cap to the extrusion and I drilled and tapped through both. The scale seems to work fine. I now need to decide whether to use the spare bit I cut off for the X axis or just cut the second scale. I am still trying to figure out the best way to cantilever the scale to the rear of the lathe to keep It out the way of the slots and gib screws on the cross slide!
