Hi everyone, I joined this board in 2005 whilst still at university, but then life and work got in the way of new hobbies for some time, a familiar story I'm sure. Now,15 years later, I have a little time to spend on model engineering, so I've acquired a third hand Chester mini-lathe, an even older drill and a space to work in. This has all fallen into place in a matter of weeks so the universe must be telling me it's time to crack on! All advice gratefully received and apologies in advance for newby questions. Andy

Welcome Andrew! I guess from your Sig you are on the Isle of Wight, I believe we have quite a few members there.

Thanks Nobby! I must ammend that... I've worked on the IOWSR for many years now, but we live near East Grinstead!

That sounds like a very familiar set of circumstances, but I got back here a few years before you Andrew! Seems a long way from UKTrainsim, gMax and re-skinning models for Train Simulator.
Welcome back - are you still with LU?
Regards,
Dan (BR7MT)

Hello Dan! Yes, familiar I'm sure, I think we last had a pint in about, what, 2005? How time has flown! I was with the tube 2006 until 2014, then left for the mainline, I am with one of the TOCs now. Are you still near London? Andy

Sure am, trying to get all the engineering stuff ready for first overhaul of the S8 fleet. Can't believe it's 10 years since they entered service.
If memory serves correctly there is a model engineering society in East Grinstead and Roger on here (see Speedy build thread) is a member.
Regards,
Dan

Thanks for the tip Dan, I've dropped the EG club an email but it's closed for the duration, so I'll join the waiting list.
Yes I can believe the S8s are due for an overhaul...my son will be 17 next week and I don't know where that time has gone either!
Regards models then, I assume that is your Dad's Britannia in the picture, is it a runner?

Welcome (back) Andrew, where about's "near" East Grinstead? I'm Eastbourne now but from Crowborough originally.

Hi Cro, I'm on the other side - we are a couple of miles west of Grinstead in a small village called Turners Hill.
your sig says you are renovating a house - we have almost finished ours after five years, how long have you been at it?

We have only been here a year, first house. All of our upstairs is done, extension planned now for next year which will rejig all of the downstairs which we had planned to do this year but obviously things got in the way.
I know turners hill, if you ever down the coast always welcome here,
Adam

Regards models then, I assume that is your Dad's Britannia in the picture, is it a runner? My Grandad's engine, currently being restored to working order. Usual problem of not getting enough time to progress it quicker, but I have at least mapped out all the steps to do it now. Plenty of good build threads on here to give you a flavour of the opportunities available Regards, Dan

Hi Andy, I'm a member of the EGMES so I'm sure our paths will cross sooner or later. We don't have a permanent track, but we do have a decent length of portable ground level track that we usually set up at about 6 fetes over the summer to fund our club. A member has a nice little private track where there are sometimes formal meetings in the year and impromptu ones. It's a friendly little club with varied interests and I'm sure you'd be made very welcome. You'll find more on our Facebook page here.
