Hiya all, so I've been watching some videos on the Internet about people building their own boilers, and I noticed in a couple of videos they part built the boiler then had an inspection, then built some more then had an inspection, then finished it and had a pressure test and also a steam test, is this standard procedure? I thought you built the boiler then plugged it up and took it for a pressure test and that was it

It's good practice to make sure the boiler inspector knows whats going on in there, the more he/she can see of your craftsmanship the easier the sign off will be. As for whether its actually a requirement I don't know.
My boiler inspector was full of helpful advice, so if nothing else its great for them to be able to see it so they can guide you anywhere you might be straying from the ideal.

There are many features of the applicable code that need to be verified that cannot be undertaken on a completed boiler, so many stage inspections are required. If you study the applicable code you will understand what are the features requiring a stage inspection and that the applicable boiler inspector is responsible for verifying that the requirements have been achieved.

As a boiler inspector I like to be involved in the build, just to check joints that will never be seen again, also advice can be given where needed, On the Boiler Inspector's Seminar which is held yearly, there is a Black Museum of failed brazed/silver soldered joints, usually caused by insufficient heat and lack of penetration, frightening some of them, so ask your Inspector for advice, he won't bite,it's a hobby and we are all there to enjoy it.

Thankyou for your help, what you've said makes sense. I've done it before but it wS a long time ago, from and inspection point of view what would be the best order to build the boiler in

I would advise that you ask the boiler inspector who's going to test it, he might have a few preferences, I usually solder the firebox tubeplate, tubes and firebox inner wrapper in one go, but some people have different ideas.
