About a year ago I looked around for a granite surface plate but was put off by the high cost of this item. Just recently however I noticed a company was selling them on ebay at less than half the price I was previously being asked, and I bought one. The plates originate from China(what doesn't these days!) but for £40 plus £10 carriage for an 18"by 12" by 3" plate weighing in at 35kg I think they represent terrific value. My plate came with a test certificate (assuming reliable) which indicated a 25 point flatness test within a couple of microns. Once in place they are great but they are HEAVY. If you are looking for a granite plate they seem to be a good buy. I bought mine from "The Tool Shop" on ebay in the UK but I am sure they are available elsewhere. Doug Johnston

Haven't seen 'em on Oz eBay yet, but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks Doug
