Hi. I am a recently retired electronics engineer who is hoping to complete the Rob Roy started whilst still an apprentice! Also have designs of building a 5" GWR 4-6-0 or an LMS Patriot. Hoping to learn from the expert advice on this forum and maybe be able to contribute in the future.

Hi and welcome on Board Pete. One of the more open forums as several of us do in fact know each other and DID tend to meet up at Exhibitions and other places. I also love the G.W.R. and have several models under construction. Although we have been building an extension to our Workshop over the summer. Pictures of in the General Chat. 4-6-0 MMM Torquay Manor is a nice project. A Grange a bit more powerful and closer to scale. Or a Saint? All 3 ready for a look over for details in FULL SIZE these days. Hinting that I have a set of drivers for a Grange or a Manor the wrong set in a Large Prairie from Reeves, available.
I am going to mate a Gemma boiler to a Rob Roy chassis to give it a bit more steam. Among my TOO MANY projects.
Best Regards
David and Lily.

Welcome Pete, I agree with Chris (GWR7800) the Torquay Manor is a well balanced loco that performs very well. But a word of caution, these things take along time to build so choose a loco that you really want, too many part built locos languishing under benches because interest waned in the model. Good luck, there's plenty of experienced people here to help and advise.

Chris D Rob Roy taught me how long it takes to build a model locomotive - still needs finishing. 5” gauge, although much heavier is a bit larger scale which will make small components a little easier to handle (hopefully). I have always loved the GWR 4-6-0s since having an OO gauge model of Cardiff Castle as a youngster - it could pull every wagon I had! Family, work and lack of facilities are finally ceasing to be a restriction. The other hobby of playing tuba in a brass band has gone by the wayside since Covid as well. Pete
