'Morning guys,
Now the weather is warming up I am looking at constructing the ashpan for my Martin Evans' 'Springbok'.
I have a few questions about this, and would like to hear from any members who have made this ashpan.
Would you please drop me a Message if you might be able to offer advice please?
thanks in advance,
Geoff (in a soggy Cornwall)

What do you want to know? I have a B1 although I didn't make it I have made a new grate recently and am very familiar with the design. The new grate I showed in 'What I've done today' about a couple of months ago here modeleng.proboards.com/thread/10766/today?page=333. Chris D

I have got to know several owners of B1 s and they all suffer exactly the same problems as Speedys and Simplexes and of course the 2 Twin Sisters that have managed to be made (Not via the DRAWINGS) The rear axle is in the middle of the ash pan and wears out quickly with the grit deposited.
I have over the past few nights gone over the Twin Sisters RE DESIGN I am doing and have come up with a super double hopper and damper doors idea. The Axle boxes are in a totally sealed box and ash is prevented from getting to them.
David and Lily.
PS The existing ash pan on all 3 are a s*****g pain in the b******e getting in or taking out.

Here is our new design for Simplex. Even though the rear axle is now well out of the way there is still the possibility of ash getting into the bearings. They also make the frames stronger and in the case above the forward wall of the box can house an axle pump body. David and Lily.

Probably a tad late, but I've only just discovered this site. I have a Simplex which has the typical Martin Evans designed grate & ashpan which:- a) burns out the grate b) destroys the rear axle due to ash ingress
Therefore I've rebuilt my grate & ashpan as a fixed unit, with the ashpan being situated hard to the underside of the foundation ring on the boiler, this is not removed therefore ash has little chance of dropping onto the axle. The grate is attached to a hinged door on the bottom of the ashpan and is pivoted so that removing the securing pin the door flap drops and pulls the grate down releasing the fire. It does sometimes need prodding from the fire door, but this is a small price to pay. This has worked so successfully I've incorporated it onto my 5" L1.
