Almost worth buying just to have a second set.

Almost worth buying just to have a second set. Agreed. Unfortunately my identical set is still complete! I've had to nick a few number drills to fill it up though...

Hello Simplyloco I checked this out some time ago. The Presto brand name is the original one but is now owned but the new owner/manufacturer, Suncraft International, who is based in China. The attached doesn't make clear exactly where they are produced. Maybe just sales/distribution in Sheffield. www.presto-tools.co.uk/HistoryCheers Malcolm

I've just looked at the Presto Tools website. Everything about it says 'U.K' apart from now being called Presto International Ltd. Their head office and manufacturing APPEARS to be in U.K. I have a set of 1mm to 5.9mm (in 0.1mm increments) that I bought about 20 years ago, so it is definitely U.K. made. The set that RDG show in their catalogue is identical except for the colour of the metal box. I decided to risk it, and have bought a set. I will let you all know what it is like when I get it. Lets hope!!!!! ...
The front door bell has just rung. It has arrived, 2 days after ordering!! The first thing I noticed was that the box is NOT like the photo in the RDG catalogue. The box is plastic. How long it will last in the workshop is anybody's guess, though it looks reasonable. Looking at the drills, the larger ones are all laser printed with PRESTO U.K., so hopefully, they are still being made in Sheffield.
Many years ago, I was talking about the difference between far eastern drills and U.K. made drills, with Terry Holt of Kirjeng M.E.Supplies. He is a chartered mechanical engineer. Hi said, then, that far eatsern drills have a slightly different flute angle and cutting angle, to the U.K. drill form. I have just compared the new drills with my old Presto drills, and, apart from the fact that the new ones are Black coated, and the size is laser printed instead of being stamped into the shank, they are identical. It will be interesting to see how the sharpness holds up in the workshop. The label on the box also indicates the set is made by 'Presto Ltd Sheffield England.'
Bob.

I drive past the Presto site regularly and it is flat. I’m not sure if they relocated somewhere else in Sheffield but the original site on Penistone Rd has been bulldozed. Still bought a set though, seemed like a good deal. 😉

I'm in the middle of ordering some bits from RDG. I'm minded to ask for a discount following all your purchases! John

About £35 is the going rate for them. But you can use your discount card for RDG if you go direct.

Quite an extensive history on the website. I found it very interesting. OOps just noticed Kennametal sold them and now owned by Suncraft.

I worked on their phone lines many times, very 60’s. When you waited in reception there was a big wall display of all their products. The only H&S advise you got was keep inside the yellow lines on the floor and don’t get knocked down by the forklifts. Happy days.

The quality seems ok for the money. I used the 1.4mm quite a lot today in brass and steel and it showed no sign of blunting, although it did lose its blackened finish, something my Dormer set never has.
