Got half way through then switched off. I could then start to uncurl my toes and stop tingling.

Mike and Denise, boating friends of ours, lived next door to Our Fred for many years. His house that you see on the TV is, in fact, semi-detached: they lived on the other side. In summary, they said it was an absolute nightmare... John

Hello John,
Yes, I've heard others say the same.......I think a lot of his "Fans" don't realise that his house is / was part of a row of other houses I believe and his passions --- including boiler rivetting etc. --- weren't always shared by his neighbours....to put it mildly !!
I have a neighbour on either side of my house who indulge in Bikes and fast cars, my immediate neighbour is a single pensioner lady who is almost fully deaf but I still have to be considerate as to when I'm at work in the machine shop...
One man's meat---etc ??

Fred's house is not semi detached. If you follow the link you will see the white painted part is the original house, the brick part is the extension that Fred built. This is literally just around the corner from me Freds House

Fred once gave me a tip about climbing ladders, always hold the stiles not the rungs. There are 2 reasons for this 1) If a rung breaks under your foot you will slip down to the next rung, if you are holding it you will fall backwards 2) The last bloke to climb the ladder may have had dog s**t on his boots

Used to walk past Fred's house on Radcliffe Road on my way to Bolton College many times in the 90's and at that time he had built an annex to it, but quiet sure it was a detached house. A remarkable and a likable chap but no saint to wives or neighbours IMHO.

YES A WONDERFUL MAN. And as a Man of STEAM got to open all sorts of interesting Places. Some a short drive from where I once lived. And having found him among the very rambling Museum got to sit down and chat... Which got longer. And we chatted about what I had done in 5 inch gauge and showed him a photo I had with me of Gemma. And still People could not find him. I told him of our Students who were going on to a life of making things for a living. We had Jason Lane at that time who ended up making bits for Keven Mcloud on his home by the sea. Freds two boys were enjoying driving his Traction Engine up and down and entertaining most of the visitors. Such a great thing that I had spent my life also bashing metal and had a passion for machinery. Then the people found him!!! David and Lily.

I particularly liked the TV programme showing his love of industrial architecture and his great skill in freehand sketching of the same...a side of him that's not often highlighted... I once stood in a line of children at the Steam Rally in Onslow Park, Shrewsbury just to get his autograph on a programme!!............ www.shrewsburysteamrally.co.uk/ ...... then promptly lost it when I got home...DOH !!

Watch episode 7 of Fred’s “Made in Britain” series and you will see him driving 9F 92214 with yours truly on the footplate with him and my stepson firing. His producer wasn’t sure if he would actually turn up on location that day, as he was very ill by this time (July 2004), but he did and we had a great day filming. I had no prior “rehearsal” or script to work to, so my ad-libbing sounds mostly awful and makes me cringe....but I will never forget the day and how he was so natural and down to earth and made us laugh such a lot. Sadly he passed away about three months later. When 92214 was based at the East Lancs for a while, a mate and myself made a pilgrimage to his house one evening, also to the Church Hall where Peter Kay’s show “Phoenix Nights” was filmed....also near Bolton. Cheers Don

I might have watched that episode on BBC4 recently Don, the channel has been showing a range of Fred's TV shows, never a dull moment.

Here's a tour around Fred's house and garden }--------- youtu.be/aFz4GF4UDiEIn the video "Fred's Grand Tour" he visits the SVR at Bridgnorth and is invited up onto the footplate of ( I think ) the LMS 8F in light steam ....... His host was the then Shedmaster John Robinson ( now retired and a member of Rugeley MES )....whilst the Fireman was fellow machinist and my late friend Roy Mort....... Sands of time, eh ??

I cannot remember that one of how to erect the platform so thank you, super to see even if a bit tummy wobbling.
My susceptibility to heights has got worse with time. We climbed the stairs inside a big church tower somewhere in Belgium, I think, a few years ago and I remember thinking that the lack of guarding and barriers were not quite what UK H&S would allow. As I did a quick mental 'what could go wrong here' the fear of heights hit me like a brick and it took an hour to recover. Never happened before.
The 'Fred' repeats have been running on BBC4 at 7pm on and off. There is one tonight.

During the mid 80’s I was on the afternoon shift, starting at 14-30. Had to be out of the house for 14-00 which gave time for my wife and I to watch the ITV local news.
At the time Fred had “laddered” a factory chimney to carry out some repair work. Whilst he was away from site a young man had climbed the ladder to protest about something or other, I can’t remember what? He got to the top and froze, must have looked down! Police and fire brigade were called and when Fred turned up he was asked to get him down. Now being TV there had to be a short interview with Fred. He was asked what he thought, his reply going something like this “It’s alright protesting by doing something like this but I have to get the C**T down” Heard as plain as anything on live TV!
When I got to work the mess was bubbling, I wasn’t the only one to have seen the news! The upshot being that when the evening local news came on, Newton Heath depot had completely emptied of staff, we were all in the mess room waiting for the report. No such luck, it was reported but only the video was shown with a voiceover!
He had a way with words, no doubt about that!
At one of the Mayday Steam events at Urmston, I attended with another great character, Fred Barnes. Both of a similar mould but the Barnes edges were a little more polished, saying that though, they could both put up a good point or two. They were discussing erecting a mill engine somewhere, I so wish I’d been able to record their conversation.
Waggy.
