Hello to forum members. As someone with a long interest in railways and models, and some limited experience in engineering I am finding the threads really interesting and informative. I have often thought about making a live steam loco, and, heading towards retirement when time will be more readily available, may make use of this opportunity. I have a particular interest in GWR locos of the late Dean early Churchward era, and taking on board comments of "if you are going to build something, make something you want'". I am aware of the City, Dean Goods, Bulldog and Dukedog and I was wondering what other classes of GWR locos from this era have been modelled in 5" gauge.

Welcome to the forum where you will find as much help and advice as you can handle. Not too sure about GWR locos but I personally have a hankering for a 5” class GWR 517 as supplied by Polly Models. You correct to choose a prototype that will sustain you enthusiasm, if you treat each piece as a little project and enjoy each individual success the time it takes to complete the whole loco is immaterial. Looking forward to seeing your choice, don’t forget we like pictures.

A warm welcome from all of us on the forum, as has been said, go for what you would really like to drive at the end of the apprenticeship, if you are willing to ask questions and learn from your mistakes (and believe me there will be some) the good folk on here will help you as much as they can, normally if they cannot help you they will know a man that can.
Good luck and enjoy what you do.
Norman.

Among my own collection of projects is a small Prairie in 5" Gauge from Works drawings 4400 and 4500. I also looked at a River Class which are very elegant.
And welcome to the Forum.

Also slightly smaller is the GWR 517 from Poly Models. This is what the 1400's were based upon.
The wheel castings are superb as I have 2 setts of them.
