Guys,
I was reading "Foundrywork for the Amateur" by Terry Aspin in the bath the other night and came across the statement that iron, as in an iron crucible, is soluable in molten aluminium. Terry reports that a number of metals are soluable in aluminium and will lead to a 'deleterious' casting.
See page 7 of this very informative little book from the workshop practice series. This one was number four.

Yes Steve, I've read & noted that info in several publications, however, from our perspective, the use of a steel crucible has little adverse effect (other than to shorten the crucible life by eatin' through 'em)
