Hello,
I’m (hopefully) going to view a 5 inch Brit soon and I understand the Winson models can be fairly troublesome, this one being described as “asthmatic”. Is there any advice or info you guys can tell me? A bit vague but I’m struggling to find much information.
Thanks!

Check out britanniabuilder.com/ for a complete build blog of a Modelworks Britannia. I believe it was derived from the Winson's kit and has a lot of useful tips and examples of extra detailing. I hope it helps. Mike

Hello jporterledge, welcome to the forum.
"asthmatic" probably relates to a problem with the valves and valve sleeves. It is going to be impossible for any of us to tell you exactly what might be wrong. There are two of us (that I know of) on this forum who have recently tackled the Winson/Modelworks valves and pistons, but we would have to know the detailed history of what has been done before, and likely take it all apart, to know for sure. There was an article in Model Engineer 6th November 2020 discussing this very topic.
As to whether you buy it or not, it's up to you to decide what you want to tackle, and what your abilities and equipment might be. It can all be sorted for sure, but it might mean the boiler and cylinders have to come off, so be mentally prepared for a repair of that magnitude.
You can privately message me with your phone number if you want more information and I will try and be of some help.
Norm

Walk away--the boilers are prone to early failure as soldering-Penetration poor and have seen 3 with backhead showing leaks---was informed by winson Brit owner--if the Winso/modelworks boilers have not been replaced by now-they will be soon...very good luck.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the advice, I didn’t end up purchasing it in the end (I think it’s still for sale actually) I ended up buying a Springbok B1, has fresh hydraulic and steam certificates etc should be steaming it on the weekend.
