I am nearing completion of my Black 5 boiler with only the smokebox tubeplate and backhead to install. Which part is preferable to leave to the final operation?
The backhead would use some form of fixings such as rivets to close the gap with the outer wrapper, but because the operation is closing the box access to the inside is not possible so what method would be used to affix the backhead for silver soldering?

For me I've always done the backhead last but I can't think of a good reason to do so, just my preference.
To hold the backhead in place I've used bronze screws of a small BA size (can't remember what they are off the top of my head - probably 8s)and a lightly closed clamp on the foundation ring at each side. The backhead goes up to the side pieces of the foundation ring already installed so provides a firm location.
