Hello all I am retired and as such decided to build a loco I have started a Maid of Kent . I have drawings a very little workshop and have started. I am trying to find build instructions from Model Engineer, if a member has or can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

This link Model engineer index link takes you to a searchable index of the Model Engineer magazine. Entering "Maid of Kent" reveals that the main LBSC articles started in 1947, issue 2431. There seem to be some useful-sounding articles by K.N Harris in 1965. Not that this gets you closer to the actual articles, of course. Some clubs have extensive libraries of old issues - in the case of IWMES only missing the very one I need! Wilf

Thank you for your reply. I will try to obtain copies or reprints of all the relevant work still to be done, which is still very extensive . Thanks for your help it’s very much appreciated.

Hi John,
Where in Sussex are you? I'm Eastbourne but run at Beech Hurst in Haywards Heath and have my grandads Maid of Kent which is a great engine!

Hi Adam Thanks for your interest. I live in Hailsham , I am in very early stages of build and I have the intention of joining a club at some point if they will have me. John.

Hello John, welcome to the forum.
Which version of the Maid of Kent are you building? My dad used to have the inside cylinder version with Stephensons valve gear and I once owned a very good running outside cylinder version. I can say that the valve gear has had many 'improvements' over the years by various contributors to ME so it is worth searching the later updates to get a reliable valve gear.

John,
Just 15 minutes down the road then, if I can ever be of help do let me know.
Polegate is the closest club to me (and probably you for a 5" track) and I have recently joined myself, not that I have time for another club, but they were very friendly and welcoming.

Thanks Chris and Adam I am building a Stephenson inside cylinder version but not sure witch mod if any. Some advice on this would be a great help as the more I look into it the more I get bogged down. John
