Several years ago I bought a Chester Lux milling machine second hand and last year I finally got it going and fitted up with digital readouts on the X and Y axis. It's obvious to me now that it's not been overly well looked after - I changed the gearbox oil and that was very sludgy to the point where the level sight glass was just full of gunge. The bed has been damaged in several places, however for what I paid for it I'm fairly happy and can work with the damage.
My question is about the motor and I wondered if anyone else had any experience of the Lux machine. The motor is extremely noisy to the point that I'm thinking I should have ear plugs when using it. It could be the gearbox or motor I suppose although my gut feeling is the motor. The machine only stood idle for a couple of years so I didn't think there would be any issues from that but I suppose something might have gone rusty in the meantime. Any thoughts please before I start to take it to pieces.
Thanks, Ian

Mine makes a bit of a racket in top gear, and if I'm working for any length of time at that I wear ear defenders. All the other speeds are OK.
