Has anyone on here a smart solution on fitting a quill DRO to, specifically, a Warco VMC? I need to cut the scale to the actual length, and I have an idea on how to do the fitting job but I might think too complicated. Thank you in advance for any input on this matter

Here's a picture from John the Pump's thread, showing a quill DRO fitted to his mill (not a Warco). You can see that the scale has been fixed to the casing of the machine, and the sliding reader moved up and down by attachment to the existing pointer. Exact detail not clear - but it gives you a starting point. 09.06.2017 by John The Pump, on Flickr Wilf

Looks like a good functional solution, but maybe an easier installation than on a VMC?

PM me with your e-mail address and I can send you a photo of my installation on a Warco A1S. Same head as a VMC, but with a larger table.

This is the setup I fitted to my Denford Mill which looks similar to yours. It's just a sheet metal bracket and an aluminium split clamp around the bottom of the quill. I cut the scale off using a plastic grinding disc. Since this picture, I've replaced the battery with a small power supply that draws current from the controller. I can't be doing with changing batteries that often. These cheap scales are nowhere near as frugal as Mitutoyo ones. DSCN4170 by Timothy Froud, on Flickr

I bought an ac to dc board, and a dc 24 volts to 3 volts to replace the battery , and another 24volts to 12 volts to light up the display from China, total cost about £5. I made a false battery to replace where the battery normally goes so that I can always put a battery in if I need to. I am very pleased with it, and the LED light makes a lot of difference for me to see the display. the power was taken from the transformer in the mill.

Jem I made a crude adjustable power supply that took 5V from the control and reduced it to the required voltage. That's just one 3 pin regulator, a potentiometer and a capacitor. I just soldered the wires to the scale electronics.

Hi Roger, I have a similar machine and require an extension of the main machine vertical post, as you have. Do you know where I can get one or the drawing to have one made?

If you'd like to PM me with your email, I'll send you the drawing and a pdf of the model. Mine is a Denford Mill, I don't know if it's going to be the same as yours. I made mine to suit my machine.

You might want to edit your post to remove or modify your email address otherwise you will probably end up with yards of emails from spammers and robots. Just click the Edit button at top right of your post and modify accordingly. Swap the "@" for <at> instead. Or possibly George or Jason will do it for you. Regards, Steve

Agreed. That's why it is always safer to use the PM facility to share private information on all forums. For any new members, who may not know how to access the PM facility, just click on the member's user ID in the top left hand corner of their post, and a detail page comes up that has a box in the top right hand corner, to 'send message'. Click on that and you get the message page.
