For years I've had a tumbler of some sort on my list and a little cardboard box to assemble the odd bits as they became available.
Finally with all the bits and a length of alloy angle I roughly cut the two end brackets. Next was to fly cut the ends just to tidy them up a bit. Removing my Myford S7 top slide I found I could use the 'T' slots to register the angle alloy but, regardless of where I located it, I could not get a clamp on it and get it within the range of the fly cutter.
I then spotted my trusty chromed 10" Draper drop forged adjustable spanner. The jaws one end and a hole at the other it spanned over the located angle and the two available "T" slots perfectly. Using two Myford "T" bolts I clamped my angle down having just a light bend in the spanner's handle. A note here clamping down too aggressively on the Myford cross slide bends it slightly and stiffenss the whole thing.
Anyway, all done just now dealing with the guilt from abusing my spanner.

Feel no shame! Thats in the best 'git 'er done' tradition. I do things like that , but don't usually tell the clever folk on here about it.

There’s nothing to be ashamed about, after all it is an adjustable spanner and you adjusted it to suit your needs.

The burning question is? Was it a Metric or Imperial adjustable! Sorry an old apprentice joke.

The burning question is? Was it a Metric or Imperial adjustable! Sorry an old apprentice joke. I saw an advert for a tool kit in a boating mag years ago. It contained two adjustable spanners....one imperial and one metric!

Hi Steve, Does your version have the hammer attachment? Cheers Kerrin It does include a limited "Hammer" capability although I don't recall ever using it. I have other tools better suited to beating the crap out of stuff and certainly for freeing up stubborn items: "Don't force it, just use a bigger hammer". I could well be using this previously undiscovered "Clamp something down" feature again being both useful and non-destructive. It could actually have been designed for the Myford cross slide.

I learnt two phrases during my apprenticeship..... "Do not stammer - use a hammer" and "A 2lb hammer is worth a thousand maintainence manuals". I was taught well in the use of percussion screwdrivers and spanners.

My grandad used to say "don't tickle it, hit it...." usually when I was trying a feeble attempt at percussive maintenance.
When I worked in motorsport I managed to knock the valve off of an Aston Martin DB2/4 wheel while trying to refit the wheel spinner. I took the wheel off, got the local tyre fitter to fit a new valve, brought it back, and promptly did it again.

When I was an apprentice, I got many a foul word for using an adjustable instead of the correct spanner. You used what came to hand, I salute your ingenuity sir.

I always remember being told if you can't fix it with a hammer it must be an electrical fault LoL!
