I have the potential opportunity to take on a nearly completed Winsons 9F ! I believe it to be complete except for the last kit and I understand that is predominately pipe work and some plating. Although not a career engineer, I have built successfully in 7 1/4 and 4” scales and see this as a challenge to finish and get sorted !!! I’d appreciate comments / guidance on what an unfinished engine could be worth or what it is likely to be worth completed. Thanks

All depends on what’s been done on it so far.
If it’s out the box built as the kit, quite frankly it’s worthless finished or unfinished (value of boiler only thing worth money but not a lot as doesn’t fit a ‘Warnet’ loco) If it’s had the bottom end fully rebuilt with work to improve cylinders, correct materials etc but cosmetically (too half) still the kit but unfinished probably 5-6k, once finished following the kit style maybe 8k tops 10k.
If fully reworked top and bottom with moderate level of detail I can be worth 15k region, all subjective to how far someone has gone and the quality of the work.

Thanks that gives me an idea. I believe it to be complete, apart from the last kit, and built “out of the box” so no modifications done. I’m reckoning on taking it all to pieces and modifying as I go !

I’m reckoning on taking it all to pieces and modifying as I go ! There are various reasonably well documented problems notably the size of the steam passages from the regulator and through the cylinders (one of my ports through the valve sleeve almost totally missed the holes in the cylinder block so almost no steam could pass through). Early kits also needed reworked motion parts although these were supplied by Winsons so may have been fitted. Would be worth trying it on air before going to a lot of trouble finishing it off. Ian

I have rad lots of threads on their shortcomings !! I am also away of club members that have or had Winson engines and the challenges they presented. I think my priorities would be to run it, or not, on air, quick hydraulic test and then make a list of modifications from the various sites etc.

Good Luck, I acquired, 2nd hand, 3 71/4 kits and it has taken me 14 yeas to get them all running reasonably well. Regards Brian B

Just another indication of value, Steam Workshop currently have a completed one although looks to be unmodified up for £6950, bearing in mind that is a commercial trader's retail price. So as Adam says maybe £5k to £6k would be tops to pay.
