Does any other manufacturer make or made, capstan tooling suitable for myfords. 0.625 dia. Im surprised at such a limited amount of tooling that is available. Even more surprised that i cant even get a new drill chuck with a 5/8 shank on it.

This is your chance to give precision taper turning a go. An arbour with 5/8" on one end, and a Jacobs taper on the other - and you're good to go. Wilf Or just buy one: Ebay linkAnd decent chuck: ChronosOr cheap chuck: Ebay again

Plenty of small machines used 5/8 capstan tooling, Llorch and Shaublin both made capstan attachments for their machines. I don’t think Myford made any tooling, it was most probably bought in and re badged. I agree that 5/8 turret tooling is very scarce, on the plus side it is not too difficult to make your own. Have you considered using ER collets, holder should be easy enough to make. For theading there are quite a few small Coventry die heads on the usual sites with the correct size shank.

Thanks for these replies. UUU, i spent all afternoon with the same thought and going to the same sites, but found nothing. Your pointers gives me a chuck to start with. millman.having looked at what tooling is available on ebay, i think a simple centre drill holder can be made and a positional stop also made. So im half way to making something. The reason for the capstan in the first place was to make some longish , thin bolts , so all i really need is a roller box and a die head. my search for a die head has found all but a working 5/8 box, but i will keep looking.
Thanks again for your replies

I had two goes getting a die head. The first one I bought arrived at the office front desk. I asked the receptionist to bring it up, but she said it was too heavy to lift. I had misjudged the size. I managed to resell it - perhaps the next owner didn't know any better.
The second one was the right size and cheap, but a bit rough. Herbert/Coventry will still service them, so at some expense I had it done, and it's first rate now.
Wilf

Is Sheffield Tooling what was formerly known as Rileys, with a big wooden micrometer fixed to the roof above the shop?
