What's the thinking about using rod-type crownstays on Rob Roy boilers rather than Mr Evan's approach? A lot of Rob Roy boilers from Blackgates etc seem to use rod stays. Quite a profusion of them in some cases; 16 on a Blackgates boiler, but 10, two rows of five, on some others. Anyone made a Rob Roy sized boiler and fitted them? Thanks in advance.

Not on Rob Roy - but Steve and I found the girder-type stays on his Britannia a real pain to fix. So for his O2, he re-designed to fit rod stays on the crown, and we found that much easier.
As with all things boiler related, the advice of your club's boiler inspectors should be sought. This is a modification to a published design and some might get nervous about their competency to judge if it's right. Your knowledge of the Blackgates solution may help.

Thanks for the reply, do you know of any Rob Roy sized locos that do use rod-type crownstays? Might be interesting for me to have a look.

Alas I have not. A quick surf about brings up this Rob Roy boiler by Blackgates which, as you noted in your first post, has got rod stays. Station road SteamWilf
