Hi everyone,
Bear with me on this…. My Grandad was a tool maker for Lucas’ in Birmingham during WW2, and a keen model engineer, and my Father was a production engineer lecturer at Aston University, and also dabbled in model making, a father son thing to do. Well my Grandad died at the ripe old age of 98 in 1995, and unfortunately prior to this my Father died in 1982 when I was 16. My Uncle, Dads brother who lived in the same house all his life, passed away last year, you still there!!! Very long story short, I have managed to get a lot of objects out of the house before it was sold.
There are 2 trains, one 5” GNWR 0-6-0 Jinty, and a 2.5” model of a GNR No:251, both trains in museums at present. Several stationary engines and boxes of bits for what looks like planned projects that never happened. Now, (thank God I hear you moan) this is where things have sparked a lifetimes regret that I never had a chance to learn from my father the engineering skills. I have found a chassis for a Jinty, complete with a few bits. Now I’m assuming it was my father’s project as a teenager, and he never completed it. So, that’s where I have decided to ‘have a go’ and finish it off. I’m 57, an electrician, and have absolutely no experience at metalwork. I’ve just bought a Myford ML10 and some tools. I have booked myself in at my local College for some evening classes in basic lathe and milling practices so will look forward to that. I haven’t a clue about inches, imperial threads etc, as I’m a metric guy, but I have seen on here a very useful thread about LBSC’s Tich train, which is a God send if ever there was one!
I will need a lot of help here, but from what I’ve seen, you guys are full of a wealth of knowledge, and patience I hope!
I can’t see where to attach photos on this page, but I will add some when I’ve worked that out!
First ‘project’ is to have a go at sizing some off cuts I collected from my Granddads workshop, see if I can get to a certain diameter, in mills I’m afraid! Well at the moment!
Thanks in advance for what seems like a very daunting but rewarding project.
Adrian
