I'm still trying to fathom out why Flying Scotsman hit.... No BS, it wasn't a tap or nudge or kiss.... The stock as hard as it did. I've done a shed load of shunting, 2 years carriage shunter, 4 years freight guard at Oxford. We always... Always stopped well before any stock, we always stayed in view of the driver(losing sight of the shunter is a stop signal) and we constantly signalled to the driver the state of affairs. We never went faster than walking pace. So... Where was the shunter? Why didn't the driver stop short? Why was he going as fast as he did? Imagine the mess if the shunter was already in the 4 foot ready to couple up!

I went back to look at the original video again, to check if the driver was looking back on the side nearest the camera, in which case, as Les says, the shunter should have been visible. The railway equivalent of 'No reversing without a banksman' rule for road vehicles on construction sites.
Anyway, it isn't available anymore, due to a copyright issue from someone called Flora Thompson.

I can say that the driver was not visible because the loco is left hand drive. As I remember it the fireman was sitting in his seat. If there was a shunter he wouldn’t have been visible from the platform side anyway.
