Just found this one ...
In the old days I believe the kit to use would be a "Grid Dip Oscillator". As I recall its a bit like a little transmitter in the general range of the target tuned circuit frequency which, demonstrates a "dip" as the thing is tuned through the the resonant frequency of the target tuned circuit. At resonance the "unknown" tuned circuit draws energy/power from the source and this is registered on a meter as a "dip" or drop in a meter reading.

Steve, you are quite right about using a GDO to find resonance. I bought a beaten-up one from eBay and refusbished it. A replacement scale was needed that I was able to toch up and print together with making a missing coil from the set. Someone had been inside and rewired parts of the circuitry but now back to normal. John
