Question for our learned members please. Had this Leinen Lathe for at least 35 years! It’s the larger tool room lathe not the watchmaker’s type. The question I have is what oil do I use in the gearboxes and the oil in the spindles I can’t remember what I used in either! Many thanks in advance Chris

Is it a LZ4S? In which case it is a very nice lathe and you can get "away with" more common oils than the bigger DLZ140 which has a geared head which the gears run in a gear oil.
Hydraulic oil (AWS 32) is a good lathe way oil because amongst other properties it does not absorb water.
Any oil is better than no oil ... Oil has advanced a long way in the last 35 years but please do not use spare car engine oil because it is designed to "clean the engine" and operates at a different temperature than our lathes operate at.

Jo Hi Jo the AWS oil I bought was when I got the Lathe. It’s a large lathe! It has 2 gearboxes the main gearbox and another under the cross slide, it’s got coupled cross feed and screwcutting function. I must confess I haven’t used the lathe for at least a year! So today I’ve been cleaning and checking the levels etc. I just cant remember what oil I had to use, I think I used the AWS oil on the spindle ( top part ) the gearbox I thought was different but can’t be sure! Hence the questions. Thanks for the advice regards Chris I think I sent you some casting for an engine some years ago when I owned Portsmouth Models?

Hi Chris, I am not sure if we are at cross purposes: A geared Lathe head is different from having a thread cutting gearbox. My Colchester Master has a geared head and the gears run in a special oil (never replaced it), my Prazimat has a geared head and it uses more standard gearbox oil On the Castings front: Yes they were for a Stentor Jo

On my Myford 254, the headstock gears, spindle bearings (taper rollers), the thread-cutting gearbox and the apron all use the same ISO68 grade oil. That's what's specified so it's very easy for me.
Have you tried calling the chap at Lathes.co.uk? His website is a mine of information, and he may have access to documentation which goes further than is shown.

Jo Hi Jo looking at Lathes.co.uk as uuu suggested it’s close to a LZ4S, so the oil I was enquiring about is for the six speed box and the gearbox under the cross slide. I’ve emailed them so see what happens! Chris Thanks for your advice.

Had a reply from Alison at Rondean website they can’t give me direct information for my lathe however they have suggested that the headstock uses HYD 32. The h/s feed gearbox uses the same HYD 32, the apron gearbox HYD 68. This is based on the Colchester lathes. Thank you for all the reply’s, this may help others as well? Regards Chris

Don't know about Rondean, but www.lathes.co.uk say they have a manual for your lathe, which, I suppose, should answer your question.
