Can anyone assist me with the easiest method of quartering 31/2" gauge loco wheels. I believe that it is possible to construct a jig to enable this to be done accurately.

I have done all mine on the lathe between centres. Use a peg held in the toolpost as a stop for one crankpin and a pin stood on the bed to stop the other end from turning. Move nothing but the tailstock barrel to release the quartered wheelset. Quarter each set without touching the settings and they will all be set the same. This method only suitable when using Loctite to bond the wheels to the axles. If you press them on you need a good hefty jig. A good friend of mine recommended setting cranks at 85 degrees, this means you always have one valve open to steam, as some loco's with 90 degree settings can stop with all valves closed, ie nothing happens when you open the regulator. Hope the above is of help.

Thanks, I never though of using the toolpost and lathe bed, but it seems an easy and childproof way of getting 90 degrees. I shall be giving it a go.
