Hi all,
I'm currently re doing the regulator on my simplex, as the old was was beyond serviceable. I'm wanting to fit a gas type ball valve. However due to limited space in the dome, I was wondering if anyone had fitted a 90 degree/elbow type ball valve to their engine and if so, where did you aquire it from?
Thanks

I think most builders using gas valves fit them in the Smokebox, ow big is the regulator bush in the backhead, I use a 7/8" dia brass tube with a taper screw, I'm sure that was what Martin Evans drew for Simplex, mine's been working for 40 years without any problems, as in all my locos, I do have a Stroudley in my Princess of Wales, the least said about that the better.

Don't a lot of these valves use some "plastic" parts inside? How do they behave with steam if that is the case?

It's better to get stainless steel bodied versions rather than brass - to avoid dezincification.
And yes, they have some PTFE seals inside, but these are usually suitable for the steam temperatures we encounter.

I specifically purchased a ball valve that was rated for steam and high temperature gases. Mine is mounted in the smokebox. I mad a banjo union to fit in the end to allow me to make the 90 degree turn before it hits the petticoat pipe (this was in a 3.5" LBSC Britannia). It's been very successful. Never had a regulator that sealed 100% before! I've been using it for a year now, I would guess at around 100 hours in steam. No sign of degredation of any kind.
